Context: Revelation 5:9-10 records the heavenly song to the Lamb: "Worthy are You to take the scroll and open its seals, because You were slain, and by Your blood You purchased (ἠγόρασας) for God those from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign upon the earth." Revelation 14:3-4 describes the 144,000: "And they sang a new song before the throne...And no one could learn the song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed (ἠγορασμένοι) from the earth. These are the ones who have not been defiled with women, for they are virgins...They have been redeemed (ἠγοράσθησαν) from among men as firstfruits to God and to the Lamb."
OT-to-OT Development
- The "purchase" (ἀγοράζω) language echoes goel redemption—acquiring what belongs to another by paying the price.
- "From every tribe and tongue and people and nation" universalizes what Boaz did for one Moabitess. The kinsman-redeemer's scope expands to all nations.
- "Kingdom and priests" (v. 10) fulfills Exodus 19:6—what Israel was called to be, the redeemed from all nations become.
Connections
- TO OT: Leviticus 25:25, 47-49 (goel purchase), Exodus 19:6 (kingdom of priests), Isaiah 43:1 (I have redeemed you), Psalm 74:2 (the tribe You have redeemed)
- FROM OT: Ruth 4:9-10 (Boaz's public declaration of purchase), Psalm 49:7-9 (no man can redeem another)
- PARALLEL: 1 Corinthians 6:20; 7:23 (you were bought with a price), 2 Peter 2:1 (the Master who bought them), Galatians 3:13 (Christ redeemed us)
Christological Connection: Revelation portrays Christ as the ultimate Kinsman-Redeemer. (1) "You Were Slain": Boaz paid money; Christ paid with His life. The Lamb's slaughter is the redemption price. (2) "With Your Blood You Purchased": ἠγόρασας—the marketplace purchase verb. Christ bought people for God. The transaction is complete. (3) "From Every Tribe": Boaz redeemed one Moabitess; Christ redeems from every ethnic group. The kinsman's local act becomes the Lamb's universal achievement. (4) "Kingdom and Priests": Boaz's redemption produced David's royal line; Christ's redemption produces a "kingdom and priests"—royal priesthood from all nations. (5) "They Will Reign upon the Earth": Boaz's act secured Ruth's inheritance in the land; Christ's redemption secures believers' inheritance in the new earth. (6) "Redeemed from the Earth": Complete reversal—those who were slaves become rulers; those who were lost become "firstfruits." The kinsman-redeemer trajectory reaches its eschatological consummation in the Lamb's eternal victory.
Connection Method(s): Longitudinal Theme (Redemption, primary) — the ἀγοράζω purchase-language here is the consummation of the canon-wide go'el/ransom trajectory, and the dative τῷ θεῷ ("for God") fixes its terminus in God's possession of a people rather than in the redeemed's acquisition of an estate. Also Typology (Institutional / relation, Backward-Looking — this is the antitype text) — the Lamb who "by Your blood You purchased for God" (Rev 5:9) discharges the go'el relation in full: near by incarnation, able as the incarnate YHWH-Redeemer, willing at the price of His own blood, making the redeemed a kingdom and priests.
