Holiness
6 stages
This video could not be loaded here. Read on: every stage of the theme is on this page.
The holiness theme traces God's fundamental character — his utter distinctness from all that is common, profane, or sinful — and his purpose to share that holiness with his people. "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory" (Isaiah 6:3). In this threefold exclamation, the seraphim declare what becomes the central theological reality: God is holy, and everything in creation is measured by its relationship to his holiness. Holiness is Scripture's supereminent divine perfection — the one attribute given a threefold emphasis, raised to the third degree (God is never called "eternal, eternal, eternal" nor "love, love, love"; only holy is tripled) — and that same thrice-holy cry the seraphim raise over the throne in Isaiah is raised, unchanged, by the four living creatures over the throne of the Lamb at the consummation: "Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come" (Revelation 4:8). The God whose holiness undoes Isaiah ("Woe is me! For I am ruined") is the God the pure in heart will one day behold unafraid.
Holiness in Scripture operates on two interconnected levels. God's holiness is ontological — he is inherently set apart, transcendent, and morally perfect. His people's holiness is derived and relational — they are set apart for God, called to reflect his character. The command "Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy" (Leviticus 19:2) establishes the pattern: holiness is both gift (God makes holy) and command (be holy). The elaborate purity system of Leviticus — with its distinctions between clean and unclean, holy and common — creates a lived pedagogy of holiness, training Israel to understand that approaching God requires transformation.
Christ transforms holiness from external separation to internal reality. He touches lepers and cleanses them rather than becoming contaminated himself (Mark 1:41). He declares all foods clean (Mark 7:19). His death sanctifies his people "once for all" (Hebrews 10:10), and the Spirit produces the holiness the law demanded but could not generate. Holiness is therefore first a gift — "Christ … who has become for us … our … holiness" (1 Corinthians 1:30) — before it is a task; a status won, before a pursuit run. The consummation brings a world where everything is holy — the distinction between sacred and common is not abolished but saturated: "HOLY TO THE LORD" is inscribed on the horses' bells (Zechariah 14:20-21), the common made holy rather than holiness made common, because all reality is filled with God's presence (Revelation 21:22).
And holiness has a telos native to it that the whole system was always for: the vision of God. Unholiness cannot survive the sight of the Holy One — this is why the unclean is barred, why Isaiah cries "Woe," why Uzzah dies — and so the entire clean/unclean pedagogy is the making of a people pure enough to see: "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God" (Matthew 5:8); "pursue … holiness, without which no one will see the Lord" (Hebrews 12:14). We can be made so pure only because the Holy One of God was made unclean for us — "made … sin" (2 Corinthians 5:21), driven outside the camp to bear our defilement (Hebrews 13:12) — and rose clean, that his holiness might be given. So the theme does not terminate in a scrubbed cosmos but in a beheld Face: "they will see His face" (Revelation 22:4) — the thrice-holy God gazed upon without fear, and beholding, we are being transformed into His image with intensifying glory (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Connection Method: Longitudinal Theme Related Methods: Divine-Identity / Promise-Fulfillment (the "Holy One of Israel" — Isaiah's signature title — comes in person as "the Holy One of God," Mark 1:24; Acts 3:14; Luke 1:35 — not a type of the Holy One but the Holy One incarnate), Typology (located subordinate cultic types within the holiness system — the Day of Atonement [Leviticus 16 → Hebrews 9-10], the Red Heifer [Numbers 19 → Hebrews 9:13], the Sin Offering — not the system as a whole; the graded holiness gradient and the clean/unclean distinctions are the theme's lived pedagogy, not each an antitype), Contrast (external purity codes vs. internal holiness in Christ), Analogy (God's holiness demands in Israel parallel Christ's demands on the church). (Anti-default note: holiness is a canon-wide reality progressively unveiled — Longitudinal Theme primary — not a type-to-antitype correspondence; the purity laws, food laws, and holiness zones are stages/pedagogy within the one theme, not independent types of the cross.)

2“Speak to the whole congregation of Israel and tell them: Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.
5Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, you will be My treasured possession out of all the nations—for the whole earth is Mine. 6And unto Me you shall be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words that you are to speak to the Israelites."
3Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the LORD meant when He said: ‘To those who come near Me I will show My holiness, and in the sight of all the people I will reveal My glory.’” But Aaron remained silent.

Texts
3And they were calling out to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory." 4At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook, and the temple was filled with smoke. 5Then I said: “Woe is me, for I am ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips dwelling among a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Hosts.” 6Then one of the seraphim flew to me, and in his hand was a glowing coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7And with it he touched my mouth and said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your iniquity is removed and your sin is atoned for.”

21“I hate, I despise your feasts! I cannot stand the stench of your solemn assemblies. 22Even though you offer Me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them; for your peace offerings of fattened cattle I will have no regard. 23Take away from Me the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. 24But let justice roll on like a river, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
IVChrist — Holiness Embodied and Imparted
Texts
10And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
41Moved with compassion, Jesus reached out His hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” He said. “Be clean!”
19because it does not enter his heart, but it goes into the stomach and then is eliminated.” (Thus all foods are clean.)
41Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum!” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”
30It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God: our righteousness, holiness, and redemption.
21In Him the whole building is fitted together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord.
9But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, to proclaim the virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
VThe Church — Holy Nation in Progress
Texts
15But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, 16for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”
13But we should always thank God for you, brothers who are loved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning to be saved by the sanctification of the Spirit and by faith in the truth.
14Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.
2To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:
1Therefore, beloved, since we have these promises, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that defiles body and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
VIAll Things Holy — The Consummation
But holiness does not terminate in a scrubbed cosmos. The purity was always for something — the vision of God, the one privilege the whole system was training a people to survive. Read one verse past "nothing unclean enters" and the point of it all appears: the reason nothing unclean enters is that "they will see His face" (Revelation 22:4) — and no unclean thing could survive that sight. So the whole migration of "HOLY TO THE LORD" ends in the moment the ransomed lift the eyes Adam dropped in the garden and gaze full into the face of the thrice-holy God (Isaiah 6:3; Revelation 4:8) — without fear, because the Holy One of God was made unclean for us ("made … sin," 2 Corinthians 5:21; driven outside the camp, Hebrews 13:12) and gives his holiness as a robe (1 Corinthians 1:30). The fire that would consume the unclean fell already on the Son. And beholding that Face, we are made like it: "we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into His image with intensifying glory" (2 Corinthians 3:18). God's original purpose — a holy creation tended by holy image-bearers who see his face — is fully realized. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God."
Texts
27But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who practices an abomination or a lie, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life.
22But I saw no temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.
20On that day, HOLY TO THE LORD will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, and the cooking pots in the house of the LORD will be like the sprinkling bowls before the altar. 21Indeed, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the LORD of Hosts, and all who sacrifice will come and take some pots and cook in them. And on that day there will no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the LORD of Hosts.
Across the whole theme
Inner-Biblical Threads
The holiness motif is one fabric the biblical authors wove, not a topic we assemble. Four connective threads hold it together:
- The qadash / "HOLY TO THE LORD" inscription-arc. The theme is the migration of an inscription from the one to the all: holiness first predicated of time (Genesis 2:3, the sanctified seventh day, the first qadash — holiness before sin) → engraved on the high priest's golden plate ("HOLY TO THE LORD," Exodus 28:36 — the one man, the one day, the one room) → stamped on the horses' bells (Zechariah 14:20-21 — the mundane made sacred) → "nothing unclean" in the city that is all holy of holies (Revelation 21:27).
- The graded holiness gradient. Holy/common is not a binary but a gradient on two axes — ritual (unclean → clean → holy, Leviticus 10:10) and spatial (the concentric zones, outside-the-camp → holy of holies, with Nadab and Abihu at the lethal inner boundary, Leviticus 10:1-3). Its NT collapse is the torn veil (Mark 15:38) opening into the cubic city where the whole is holy of holies.
- The contagion-direction, reversed. Under the old order uncleanness is aggressive and holiness fragile (Haggai 2:12-13: the corpse-defiled defile all they touch; consecrated meat does not sanctify what it touches). In Christ the vector reverses — his holiness becomes the communicable power (the leper, Mark 1:41; the flow of blood, Mark 5:25-34; the corpse, Mark 5:41). The reversal is christological: Christ overturns the very holy/unclean direction that Haggai's priestly ruling had stated — the Old Testament states the rule (Haggai 2:12-13); the Gospels show Christ reversing its vector.
- The Trisagion and the "Holy One" title (NT use of OT). The seraphim's thrice-holy cry (Isaiah 6:3) is raised unchanged over the throne of the Lamb (Revelation 4:8) — the theme's tightest inclusio and a divine-identity note. And the "Holy One of Israel" (Isaiah's signature) becomes "the Holy One of God" (Mark 1:24; Acts 3:14; Luke 1:35; Psalm 16:10 → Acts 2:27/13:35). Peter's "be holy, because I am holy" (1 Peter 1:16) draws its fuller source-form from Leviticus 11:44-45 (the food-law heart of the purity code) as much as Leviticus 19:2.
