συζώννυμι (syzōnnymi)

(see-ZONE-nee-mee)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to gird together, bind on around (σύν, together, + ζώννυμι, to gird). From Aaron's ordination-vesting: Moses 'put on him the tunic, and girded him with the sash, and clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod on him, and girded it together on him with the skillfully woven band, and fastened it' (Leviticus 8:7). The priest does not dress himself; he is dressed — every layer applied by the mediator at God's command (8:4-5), consecration worn before it is exercised. The girding descends the canon to a supper: the true Priest 'took a towel and girded himself' to wash feet (John 13:4-5), and stands among the lampstands sashed in gold (Revelation 1:13).

  • to gird together
  • to bind on around

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Leviticus 8:7 (and he placed upon him the shoulder-piece, and tied it together on him according to the making of the shoulder-piece, and fastened it to him).

συκάμινον (sykaminon)

(see-KAH-mee-non)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — the fruit of the sycamore-fig (fruit of συκάμινος — the mulberry-fig tree of Luke 17:6; neuter plural here). Amos's credentials, offered to a hostile chaplain: 'I was no prophet, nor a prophet's son; I was a herdsman, a nipper of sycamore-figs — and the LORD took me from behind the flock, and the LORD said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel' (Amos 7:14-15). Fig-nipping was day-labor: piercing the fruit so it would ripen. Against Amaziah's professional religion stands a drafted layman with no guild and no salary — God's standing habit of sending the unlicensed (1 Samuel 16:11; Acts 4:13), that the authority be unmistakably His (2 Corinthians 4:7).

  • sycamore-fig fruit
  • mulberry-fig

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Amos 7:14 (I was not a prophet, nor a son of a prophet; but I was a herder, one plucking fruit of the mulberry-tree).

(see-KON)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a fig-grove, orchard of figs (from συκῆ, fig tree). The covenant-curse word for devoured prosperity: the invading nation eating vineyards and fig-groves in Jeremiah, and the LORD's own review in Amos — "I multiplied blight upon your vineyards and your fig-groves... and even so you did not return to Me."

  • fig-grove
  • fig orchard

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Jeremiah 5:17 (they shall eat up your harvest and your bread; they shall eat up your sons and daughters, your flocks and herds — and they shall eat up your vineyards and your fig groves); Amos 4:9 ("I struck you with parching and blight; you multiplied your gardens, your vineyards, your fig groves, and your olive groves — the caterpillar devoured them; and not even thus did you turn to Me, says the LORD").

G4811

συκοφαντέω (sykophantéō)

(soo-kof-an-teh'-o | soo-koh-fahn-TEH-oh | syoo-koh-fahn-TAY-oh)

Definition

from a compound of G4810 and a derivative of G5316; to be a fig-informer (reporter of the law forbidding the exportation of figs from Greece), "sycophant", i.e., (genitive and by extension) to defraud (exact unlawfully, extort); accuse falsely, take by false accusation.

  • to accuse wrongfully, to calumniate, to attack by malicious devices
  • to exact money wrongfully
    • to extort from, defraud

Note

At Athens those were συκοφάντης whose business it was to inform against any one whom they might detect exporting figs out of Attica, and as sometimes they seemed to extort money from those loath to be exposed, the name "συκοφάντης" from the time of Aristophanes down was a general term of opprobrium to designate, a malignant and base accuser for love of gain.

συκοφάντης (sykophantēs)

(see-ko-FAN-tees)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — an extortioner, false accuser (the agent-noun of συκοφαντέω — the verb of Luke 3:14 and of Zacchaeus's fourfold restitution, Luke 19:8). In the great royal psalm the King who judges the poor in righteousness 'shall humble the extortioner'; Proverbs sets the extortioner-king against the long-lived ruler.

  • extortioner
  • false accuser

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Psalms 72:4 (He shall judge the poor of the people, and shall deliver the sons of the needy — and shall humble the extortioner); Proverbs 28:16 (a king lacking revenues is a great extortioner — but he that hates injustice shall live a long time).

συκοφαντία (sykophantia)

(see-ko-fan-DEE-ah)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun from συκοφαντέω (G4811, to extort by false accusation — the verb of Zacchaeus's restitution) — extortion: gain wrung out by oppression. Qoheleth's ledger of tears — "I saw the extortions done under the sun... and they had no comforter" — and the psalmist's plea: "redeem me from the extortion of men."

Definition

Noun from συλλαμβάνω (G4815, to seize; to conceive) — both of that verb's faces: a capture, and a conception. συλλογή (syllogē)

(seel-lo-GHEE)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a gathering, collection; a place for collecting (from συλλέγω, to gather). The armament of the valley of Elah: 'he took his staff in his hand, and chose for himself five smooth stones from the brook, and put them in the shepherd's bag that was his, for a collection; and his sling was in his hand' (1 Samuel 17:40). The verse slows down over ordinary gear — staff, stones, pouch, sling — because the battle's theology rides on it: 'the LORD saves not with sword and spear' (17:47). The stones are chosen carefully (five, smooth, from the wadi) and trusted not at all; the trust is in the Name carried alongside them (17:45; Psalm 20:7).

  • collection
  • gathering-pouch

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: 1 Samuel 17:40 (and he chose for himself five smooth stones from out of the rushing stream, and he put them in the canteen of the shepherd, the one being his, for a collection; and his sling was in his hand).

συλλογισμός (syllogismos)

(seel-lo-ghis-MOSS)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a reckoning, computation — here the census-count (from συλλογίζομαι, to reckon together — Luke 20:5's verb). The census-ransom statute: 'when you take the reckoning of the sons of Israel, each shall give a ransom for his soul to the LORD, and there shall be no plague among them in their numbering' (Exodus 30:12). To count the covenant people is to touch what belongs to God — so every counted head is covered by λύτρα, ransom-silver, rich and poor at the same half-shekel (30:13-15). The atonement-money was melted into the sanctuary's very sockets; David's uncovered census bought the plague the statute warned of (2 Samuel 24:10-15); and the Lord of the ransomed paid the temple-tax with a word about sons (Matthew 17:24-27; Mark 10:45).

  • reckoning
  • census-count

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 30:12 (if you should take the assessment of the sons of Israel in the overseeing of them, then each shall give ransoms for his soul to the LORD, and there shall not be among them a failure in the overseeing of them).

συλλοιδορέω (sylloidoreō)

(seel-lee-do-REH-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to join in reviling, revile together with (σύν, together, + λοιδορέω, to revile; the ABP interlinear prints the negated aorist οὐκ συνελοιδορήσατε as a single fused row at this slot). From Shemaiah's letter to the temple overseer: 'why have you not joined in reviling Jeremiah of Anathoth, the one prophesying to you?' (Jeremiah 29:26-27) — the demanded mob-voice against the prophet whose offense was a letter promising the exiles 'a future and a hope' (29:10-11). The pressure to co-revile is the crowd's oldest liturgy (Exodus 23:2); the prophets absorbed it (Jeremiah 20:7-8), and the Lord of the prophets answered it — 'being reviled, he reviled not again' (1 Peter 2:23).

  • to join in reviling
  • to revile together

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Jeremiah 29:27 (and now, why did you not join in reviling Jeremiah of Anathoth, the one prophesying to you?).

  • to compare
  • to weigh together

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Job 28:16 (wisdom shall not be compared with the gold of Ophir, with precious onyx and sapphire); Job 28:19 (the topaz of Ethiopia shall not be compared with it — it shall not be compared with vessels of gold).

σύμβλημα (symblēma)

(SEEM-vlee-mah)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a joint, coupling (σύν, together, + the βάλλω stem — where two pieces are thrown together). From the idol-assembly line: 'the craftsman grew strong, and the smith beating with the hammer, forging together — he says, The coupling is good; they strengthened them with nails, they shall set them up, and it shall not be moved' (Isaiah 41:7). Quality-control for a deity: the joint inspected, the god nailed down so it cannot fall over. 'It shall not be moved' is stolen liturgy — the psalms say it of the LORD's world and the LORD's city (Psalm 93:1; 46:5); here it must be achieved with fasteners. The true holding runs the other way: in Him all things hold together (Colossians 1:17).

  • joint
  • coupling

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Isaiah 41:7 (the fabricator was strong, and the brazier beating with a hammer, forging together; he shall say, The coupling is good; they strengthened them with nails; they shall establish them, and it shall not be moved).

G4822.2

σύμβλησις (symblēsis)

(SEEM-vlee-sis)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a joining, coupling (from συμβάλλω, to bring together — the family of συμβιβάζω). Tabernacle carpentry in both occurrences: the corner frames equal from below and joined as one at the heads into a single coupling — command and execution matching word for word.

  • coupling
  • joining

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 26:24 (the corner posts shall be equal from below, and according to the same they shall be equal from the heads unto one coupling — so shall you make for both the two corners); Exodus 36:29 (they were equal from below, and likewise equal from the heads unto one coupling — so he made for both the two corners).

G4822.3

συμβοηθός (symboēthos)

(seem-vo-ee-THOSS)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a fellow-helper, ally (σύν, with, + βοηθός, helper; plural here). The siege of Samaria's cocktail hour: 'Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions at midday, he and the kings — thirty-two kings, his allies with him' (1 Kings 20:16). Thirty-two crowned helpers, incapacitated together before noon — and the LORD routs the whole confederation by 232 young aides of the provincial governors (20:14-21), 'and you shall know that I am the LORD' (20:13). Coalitions are no substitute for the one Helper: 'some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we will remember the name of the LORD our God' (Psalm 20:7; 118:8-9).

  • ally
  • fellow-helper

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: 1 Kings 20:16 (and the son of Hadad was drinking and being intoxicated in Succoth, he and the kings — thirty and two kings, the allies with him).

  • joining, coupling, seam

Septuagint usage

14 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 26:4 (loops on the edge of the curtain at the coupling); Exodus 26:10; Exodus 28:27 (over against the ephod's coupling, above its woven band); Exodus 36:11.

συμβολοκοπέω (symbolokopeō)

(seem-vo-lo-ko-PEH-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to carouse, feast riotously (from σύμβολον in its sense of a contribution-feast — to hammer away at banquets). From the rebellious-son statute, the parents' testimony at the gate: 'this our son resists persuasion and provokes; he does not obey our voice; he is a carouser and a drunkard' — and the sentence is stoning (Deuteronomy 21:20-21). The far country's prodigal fits the affidavit exactly — riotous living, appetite, defiance (Luke 15:13) — and comes home rehearsing a plea to a father who has legal precedent for a very different reception. The robe, the ring, and the feast are measured against this statute: the son who deserved the gate got the banquet (Luke 15:22-24), because Another bore the curse outside the gate (Galatians 3:13; Hebrews 13:12).

  • to carouse
  • to feast riotously

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Deuteronomy 21:20 (our son, this one resists persuasion, and he aggravates, not obeying our voice; he is fond of carousing, drunk with wine).

σύμβολον (symbolon)

(SEEM-vo-lon)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a token, omen, divining-sign (σύν + βάλλω — a thing thrown together for interpretation; dative plural here). Hosea's indictment of do-it-yourself revelation: 'by their tokens they inquired, and by their rods they reported to him; a spirit of harlotry led them astray, and they fornicated away from their God' (Hosea 4:12 — the Hebrew is blunter: 'my people inquire of a piece of wood'). Rhabdomancy — answers read off sticks — from the nation that possessed the living oracle (Deuteronomy 18:10-14; Psalm 147:19-20). Divination is unfaithfulness before it is folly: asking wood is leaving a Husband (Jeremiah 10:8; James 1:5 stands as the open alternative).

  • token
  • divining-sign

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Hosea 4:12 (by their symbols they asked, and by their rods they reported to him; in a spirit of harlotry they were wandered, and they fornicated from their God).

G4822.7

συμβόσκομαι (symboskomai)

(seem-VOS-ko-meh)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to be pastured together, graze with (σύν, with, + βόσκω, to feed). The peaceable kingdom's first clause: 'the wolf shall be fed together with the lamb, and the leopard shall rest with the kid; calf and lion and bull shall graze together, and a little child shall lead them' (Isaiah 11:6). Predation itself is retired — not tamed predators but a re-founded food-chain, 'for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as waters cover the seas' (11:9). The verse hangs on the chapter's root: the shoot from Jesse's stump (11:1) — the holy seed left standing in the felled land (Isaiah 6:13) — whose reign extends peace to the biology itself (Romans 8:19-21; Isaiah 65:25).

  • to graze together
  • to be pastured with

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Isaiah 11:6 (and the wolf shall be fed together with the lamb, and the leopard shall be refreshed together with the kid; and a young calf and a lion and a bull shall graze together, and a small child shall lead them).

(seem-mah-KHEE-ah)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — an alliance in war, confederacy (σύν, with, + μάχη, battle). From the Moab oracle's shelter-clause: 'the fugitives of Moab shall sojourn with you; they shall be a shelter to you from the face of the pursuer — for your war-alliance was taken away, and the trampling ruler perished from the earth' (Isaiah 16:4). With every military pact stripped, the oracle points Moab's outcasts to a different security, and names it in the next verse: 'a throne shall be established in mercy, and one shall sit on it in truth, in the tent of David, judging and seeking justice' (16:5). Moab's refugees directed to David's merciful throne — the road Ruth the Moabitess had already walked, under the wings (Ruth 2:12; Matthew 1:5).

  • war-alliance
  • confederacy

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Isaiah 16:4 (the exiles of Moab shall sojourn with you; they will be a protection for you from the face of the one pursuing; for your alliance in war was lifted away, and the trampling ruler perished from the earth).

σύμμετρος (symmetros)

(SEEM-meh-tross)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Adjective — well-proportioned, symmetrical (σύν, together, + μέτρον, measure). The first word of the woe on Jehoiakim's building program: 'you built yourself a well-proportioned house' — airy upper rooms, cedar paneling, vermilion paint (Jeremiah 22:14) — raised on an unpaid neighbor's labor (22:13). The architecture is symmetrical; the ethics are not. Against the proportioned palace the oracle sets a plumb-line question: 'did not your father eat and drink and do justice and righteousness? Then it was well with him... Was this not to know me? says the LORD' (22:15-16). True symmetry is justice; a building cannot supply what the builder lacks (Amos 5:11-12, 24).

  • well-proportioned
  • symmetrical

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Jeremiah 22:14 (you built to yourself a well-proportioned house, with upper rooms ventilated, separated by windows, and being boarded by cedar, and being coated in vermilion).

συμμιγής (symmigēs)

(seem-mee-GHEES)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Adjective — commingled, mixed together (σύν + the μίγνυμι stem, to mix). From the dream-image's unstable feet: 'as you saw the iron mingled with the potter's clay — mixed together they shall be with the seed of men, but they shall not cleave one to another, as iron does not mingle with clay' (Daniel 2:43). The final kingdom's flaw is metallurgical: strength alloyed with brittleness, unions engineered (dynastic marriages, forced federations) that will not bond. Against the non-cohering amalgam stands the stone cut without hands, which strikes the feet and becomes a mountain filling the earth (2:34-35, 44-45) — one kingdom with no mixture in it and no end to it.

  • commingled
  • mixed together

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Daniel 2:43 (for you beheld the iron being intermingled with the potsherd; mixed together they will be with the seed of men, but they will not be cleaving, this one with that one, as the iron does not intermingle with the potsherd).

  • to mix together, mingle
  • to join company

Septuagint usage

4 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 14:20 (the pillar between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel — darkness to the one, light by night to the other; and the one did not mix with the other all night); Ezra 9:2 (the officials' report — "the holy seed has mingled itself with the peoples of the lands," and the hand of the leaders was first in the unfaithfulness); Proverbs 11:15 (an evil man does harm when he mixes himself with a righteous one — the surety warning); Daniel 11:6 (in the end of years they shall join together — the daughter of the king of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement, but she shall not retain strength).

Both occurrences record the same plunder: Jehoash of Israel taking the treasures of house and temple, and the hostages, back to Samaria after defeating Amaziah.

  • alliance
  • hostage-pledge

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: 2 Kings 14:14 (he took all the gold and the silver, and all the items found in the house of the LORD and in the treasuries of the house of the king, and the sons of the alliances — and he returned to Samaria); 2 Chronicles 25:24 (the parallel record — all the gold and silver, all the items found in the house of God with Obed-edom, the treasuries of the king's house, and the sons of the alliances; and he returned to Samaria).

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to stand up alongside, take one's stand together with (σύν, with, + παρίστημι, to stand by). The lone-stand psalm's double question: 'who will rise up for me against the ones doing wickedly? Who will stand with me against the workers of lawlessness?' (Psalm 94:16) — answered not by recruits but by the LORD alone: 'unless the LORD had helped me, my soul would soon have dwelt in silence' (94:17). The psalm's experience becomes Paul's deposition verbatim: 'at my first defense no one stood with me, but all deserted me... but the Lord stood by me and strengthened me' (2 Timothy 4:16-17). The ranks may empty; the Advocate does not (Psalm 118:6-7; Hebrews 13:6).

  • to stand with

συμπεραίνω (symperainō)

(seem-peh-REH-no)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to bring to an end together, finish off (σύν + πέρας, end). The second woe of Habakkuk's taunt-song: 'you devised shame for your house; you finished off many peoples — and your own soul sinned' (Habakkuk 2:10). The ledger's last line is the sting: the empire that terminated nations discovers the account was double-entry, its own soul debited with every people it closed out. Gain built on cut-off lives forfeits the gainer (Habakkuk 2:9-11 — the stone crying out of the wall); the arithmetic is the Lord's own: 'what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?' (Mark 8:36; Jeremiah 22:13).

  • to finish off

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verbal adjective — closely interwoven, plaited together (σύν + πλέκω, to plait). A collar engineered against tearing — the robe of the man who bears Israel's names is built untearable, and the law forbade the high priest to rend his garments (Leviticus 21:10). At the trial, Caiaphas tore his (Matthew 26:65) while the true Priest's tunic, 'woven in one piece throughout,' went untorn even at the cross (John 19:23-24).

Both occurrences carry Jeremiah's seventy years: the land keeping sabbath until the fulfillment of the seventy years in Chronicles, and Daniel discerning in the scrolls that same fulfillment — the word of God tracked to its completion across an exile.

  • completion
  • fulfillment

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: 2 Chronicles 36:21 (to fulfill the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah — until the land accepted her sabbaths: all the days of her desolation she kept sabbath, unto the fulfillment of seventy years); Daniel 9:2 (I Daniel perceived in the scrolls the number of the years — as the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet — for the fulfillment of the desolation of Jerusalem, seventy years).

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb from σύν (together) and πούς (G4228, foot); to bind the feet together — to bind hand and foot; also to hobble, impede. This is the LXX's Akedah verb: "Abraham bound Isaac his son hand and foot and laid him on the altar upon the wood" (Genesis 22:9) — the beloved son bound and laid on the wood. In Hosea the same word turns tender: the LORD hobbling little Ephraim's steps as a parent training a toddler, taking him up in His arms.

  • to bind hand and foot
  • to hobble, impede the feet

Septuagint usage

7 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Genesis 22:9 (Abraham bound Isaac his son hand and foot, and put him upon the altar on top of the wood); Psalm 20:8 (they were bound hand and foot and fell, but we rose and were set upright); Psalm 18:39 (You bound under me all those rising up against me); Hosea 11:3 (I bound the feet of Ephraim and took him upon My arm — and they did not know that I healed them).

  • to join in war with
  • to fight alongside

συμπορπάω (symporpaō)

(seem-por-PAH-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to fasten together with clasps (σύν, together, + πόρπη, brooch-pin; perfect passive here). The shoulder-stones of the ephod: 'they made the two emerald stones clasped together and encased in gold, carved as the engraving of a seal with the names of the sons of Israel' (Exodus 39:6-7) — six tribes to a shoulder, 'stones of remembrance,' pinned to the priest at the load-bearing joint. Israel is carried where burdens are carried, engraved seal-deep, fastened so as not to fall. The office outlives the hardware: the Priest who ever lives bears His own on Himself (Hebrews 7:25), graven on the palms of His hands (Isaiah 49:16; John 10:28-29).

  • to clasp together
  • to fasten with brooches

Septuagint usage

Verb — to escort on the way together, send forward with (σύν + προπέμπω, the NT's word for godly send-offs). Two escorts of Abraham's story: Pharaoh's men escorting Abram and all his own out of Egypt, and Abraham himself walking with the three visitors to see them on their road toward Sodom — hospitality's last mile.

  • to escort together
  • to send on the way

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Genesis 12:20 (Pharaoh gave charge to his men concerning Abram — to escort him, and his wife, and all that was his); Genesis 18:16 (the men rose up from there and looked down upon the face of Sodom and Gomorrah — and Abraham went with them, escorting them).

  • to adhere with
  • to be present with

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Psalms 94:20 (shall a throne of lawlessness be present with You — the one shaping trouble by order?); Ecclesiastes 8:15 (I praised gladness, for there is no good for a man under the sun except to eat, drink, and be glad — and it shall adhere with him in his toil all the days of his life which God gave him under the sun).

συμπροσπλέκομαι (symprosplekomai)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to grapple together with, close in combat (σύν + πρός + πλέκω — to be twined into the fight). From the north-and-south wars of the long vision: 'his sons shall assemble a multitude of many forces, and he shall come on, overflowing, and pass through, and shall settle, and shall grapple up to his strength' (Daniel 11:10). Campaign after campaign foretold in the grammar of wrestling and flood — dynasties grappling for a corridor of land across which the covenant people lie. The vision's mercy is its frame: every grapple is dated and bounded ('at the appointed time,' 11:27, 29), and the book's last chapter lifts the reader over the whole melee to resurrection and shining wisdom (Daniel 12:1-3).

  • to grapple with
  • to close in combat

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Daniel 11:10 (and he shall come, even inundating, and shall go by; and he shall settle, and shall grapple together unto his strength).

  • coincidence, chance event
  • mishap, adverse incident

Septuagint usage

4 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: 1 Samuel 6:9 (the ark on the cart — "if it goes up toward Beth-shemesh, He has done us this great harm; but if not, we shall know it was not His hand: it was a coincidence that befell us"); 1 Samuel 20:26 (Saul said nothing that day, for he thought, "something has befallen him; he is not clean"); Psalms 91:6 (you shall not fear the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the mishap and destruction that waste at noonday); Proverbs 27:9 (ointment and wine rejoice the heart, but the soul is torn apart by adverse incidents).

συμφλέγω (symphlegō)

(seem-FLEH-go)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to burn up together, scorch on all sides (σύν + φλέγω, to blaze; plural participle here — 'the ones burning them round about'). The unregistered judgment: 'he poured on them the anger of his rage, and war prevailed against them, and those burning them round about — and each of them did not know, nor lay it to soul' (Isaiah 42:25). The fire is diagnostic, and the patient sleeps through it: chastisement that is not read as chastisement corrects nothing (Amos 4:6-11 — 'yet you did not return to me'). The preceding verse supplies the reading-key refused: 'who gave Jacob to the plunderers? Did not the LORD, against whom we sinned?' (42:24) — and the same chapter holds the Servant who opens exactly these blind eyes (42:6-7, 16).

  • to burn together
  • to scorch round about

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Isaiah 42:25 (and he brought upon them the anger of his rage, and the war strengthened against them, and the ones burning them round about; and each of them did not know, nor put it unto their soul).

G4852.2

συμφοράζω (symphorazō)

(seem-fo-RAH-zo)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to cry calamity together, lament with one another (from συμφορά, disaster). From the Babylon oracle: 'the envoys shall be troubled, and pangs shall take them as a woman giving birth; and they shall lament together, one to another, and be amazed, and their faces shall change like flame' (Isaiah 13:8). The day of the LORD synchronizes grief — the proud lament in unison who never prayed in unison, seized by a labor that produces nothing (contrast Isaiah 66:7-9). The suddenness is the apostolic warning verbatim: 'when they say, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction comes upon them as labor-pains upon a pregnant woman' (1 Thessalonians 5:3).

  • to lament together
  • to cry calamity

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Isaiah 13:8 (and pangs shall have them as a woman giving birth; and they shall lament together, another to another; and they shall be startled, and shall change their countenance as a flame).

συμφράσσω (symphrassō)

(seem-FRAHS-so)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to fence in together, hedge off (σύν + φράσσω, to fence — the stopped-mouths verb of Romans 3:19). The harvest of individuals: 'in that day the LORD will hedge off from the channel of the River to the brook of Egypt — and you, gather the sons of Israel one by one!' (Isaiah 27:12). The territory is fenced like a threshing-floor and the regathering is done by hand, grain by grain: 'one by one' is the LORD's arithmetic. The Shepherd's census runs by name, not by mass (Isaiah 40:26; John 10:3); one sheep justifies a search party (Luke 15:4); and the trumpet-verse that follows gathers 'the ones perishing... and they shall worship' (Isaiah 27:13; Matthew 24:31).

  • to hedge off
  • to fence in together

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Isaiah 27:12 (and it will be in that day, the LORD will shut up together from the aqueduct of the river unto Rhinocora; but you gather together the sons of Israel, one by one!).

G4852.4

συμφρύγω (symphrygō)

(seem-FREE-go)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to parch together, roast through (σύν + φρύγω, to roast). The psalmist's bones 'parched as firewood' in the exile-psalm of the ruined man, and Ezekiel's boiling-pot parable where the bones are to be roasted through — affliction imaged as heat that reaches the frame itself.

  • to parch
  • to roast through

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Psalms 102:3 ("my days vanished as smoke, and my bones are parched as firewood" — the prayer of the afflicted one); Ezekiel 24:10 (multiply the wood, kindle the fire — that the flesh be melted away, the broth diminished, and the bones shall be parched).

  • to mix together
  • to be entangled with

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Ezekiel 22:6 (behold, the ones guiding the house of Israel — each one blended together with his own relatives in you, that they might shed blood); Hosea 4:14 ("I will not visit upon your daughters — for the men themselves blended together with the harlots, and sacrificed with the initiates; and the people, not understanding, entangled themselves with a harlot").

σύμφωνον (symphōnon)

(SEEM-fo-non)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — an agreement, a thing in concert (neuter of σύμφωνος, harmonious — the word of 1 Corinthians 7:5's 'by agreement'). The Preacher's providence-lesson: 'in the day of goodness, live in good; and in the day of evil, consider: indeed God has made this one in concert with that one, so that man should find nothing after him' (Ecclesiastes 7:14). Prosperity and adversity are not rival compositions but counterpoint by one Composer — arranged so that no one can audit the future or presume upon it. Job states the harmony from the ash-heap ('shall we receive good from God, and not evil?', Job 2:10), and the gospel resolves the chord: all things — both days — working together for good to those who love God (Romans 8:28).

  • agreement
  • concert of things

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Ecclesiastes 7:14 (in the day of goodness live in good, and look out in the day of evil; indeed, in one harmony with these God has acted, that man should not find anything after him).

  • to sweep away
  • to scrape off

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Jeremiah 22:19 (the burial of a donkey shall he be buried with — being scraped away, he shall be tossed beyond the gate of Jerusalem — the sentence on Jehoiakim); Jeremiah 49:20 (hear the counsel of the LORD against Edom — surely the least of the sheep shall be swept away; surely their dwelling shall be made desolate over them).

συναγωγή (synagōgḗ)

(soon-ag-o-gay' | soon-ah-goh-GAY | syoon-ah-goh-GAY)

Definition

from (the reduplicated form of) G4863; an assemblage of persons; specially, a Jewish "synagogue" (the meeting or the place); by analogy, a Christian church; assembly, congregation, synagogue.

  • a bringing together, gathering (as of fruits), a contracting
  • in the New Testament, an assembling together of men, an assembly of men
  • a synagogue
    • an assembly of Jews formally gathered together to offer prayers and listen to the reading and expositions of the scriptures; assemblies of that sort were held every sabbath and feast day, afterwards also on the second and fifth days of every week; name transferred to an assembly of Christians formally gathered together for religious purposes
    • the buildings where those solemn Jewish assemblies are held

Note

Synagogues seem to date their origin from the Babylonian exile. In the times of Jesus and the apostles, every town, not only in Palestine but also among the Gentiles if it contained a considerable number of Jewish inhabitants, had at least one synagogue; the larger towns had several. These were also used for trials and inflicting punishment.

συνᾴδω (synadō)

(seen-AH-do)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to sing together, sound in concert (σύν + ᾄδω, to sing). The LXX's strange music in Hosea's indictment: 'so that they sing together, as men singing in their heart, that I remember all their evils' (Hosea 7:2 — the Hebrew: 'they do not say to their hearts that I remember all their evil'). Either way the scene is the same: sin performed as ensemble, hearts in concert — while the forgotten fact encircles them: 'now their own deeds have surrounded them; they are before my face' (7:2). The unremembered Remembrancer keeps the full score (Psalm 90:8); the gospel's astonishment is that the same memory can be turned — 'their sins and lawless deeds I will remember no more' (Hebrews 8:12).

  • to sing together
  • to sound in concert

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Hosea 7:2 (so that they be together in concert, as men singing in their heart, that I remember all their evils; now their deliberations encircled them; they took place before my face).

συνάλλαγμα (synallagma)

(see-NAHL-lag-mah)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a contract, transaction, exchange (σύν + ἀλλάσσω, to exchange; genitive plural here). From the true-fast oracle: 'not such a fast have I chosen, says the LORD — but loose every bond of injustice, untie the strangling-knots of violent contracts, send the crushed away in release, and tear apart every unjust writ' (Isaiah 58:6). The fast God audits is not the stomach but the filing cabinet: paperwork can strangle, and piety that leaves the contracts intact is theater (58:3-4). Release is the LORD's own idiom — the Jubilee's liberty (Leviticus 25:10), and the Servant's synagogue reading: 'to proclaim release to the captives... to send the oppressed away in release' (Luke 4:18).

  • contract
  • transaction

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Isaiah 58:6 (untie every bond of injustice! part the violent perverseness of exchanges! send out the ones having been devastated by a free release, and tear apart every unjust writ!).

συνάνμιξις (synanmixis)

(see-nahn-MIK-sis)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — an intermingling, close dealing (the ABP's printed form; from συναναμίγνυμι, to mix up together — the verb of 1 Corinthians 5:9's 'do not associate'). From the contemptible-one's playbook: 'and from the interminglings with him he shall work treachery; and he shall come up and prevail over him with a little nation' (Daniel 11:23). Alliance as attack-vector — the league itself is the weapon, intimacy the opening for deceit (11:21, 'he shall come in by flatteries'). The vision's realism about false fellowship is the epistles' pastoral rule: associations shape and betray (1 Corinthians 15:33), and some minglings are themselves the danger (1 Corinthians 5:11; Proverbs 20:19).

  • intermingling
  • close dealing

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Daniel 11:23 (and because of the interminglings with him he shall deal in treachery; and he shall ascend, and shall excel in strength over him by a little nation).

συναναφέρω (synanapherō)

(see-nah-nah-FEH-ro)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to carry up together with (σύν + ἀναφέρω). Both occurrences carry one coffin: Joseph's oath — "God shall visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here with you" — and Moses at the exodus keeping it. The bones of Joseph crossing out of Egypt are the Torah's own witness that the promise outlives the promiser's death (the faith Hebrews 11:22 commends).

  • to carry up together
  • to bring up with

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Genesis 50:25 (Joseph bound the sons of Israel by an oath, saying — "in the visitation with which God shall visit you, you shall join in carrying off my bones from here with you"); Exodus 13:19 (Moses took the bones of Joseph with him — for with an oath Joseph bound the sons of Israel, saying, "with a visitation the LORD shall visit you, and you shall carry off my bones from here with you").

συνάντη (synantē)

(see-NAHN-tee)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a meeting, encounter (from συναντάω, to meet). Elisha's terrible question to Gehazi: 'did not my heart go with you, when the man turned from his chariot to meet you?' (2 Kings 5:26). Naaman's turning-to-meet was gratitude in motion; Gehazi monetized it — silver and garments extracted in the prophet's name from grace given free — 'is it a time to take money... and vineyards and flocks and servants?' The fee returns with interest: Naaman's leprosy cleaves to the seller (5:27). Grace is unbillable; the first simony ends as the later one is answered — 'your silver perish with you, because you thought to obtain the gift of God with money' (Acts 8:20; Matthew 10:8).

  • meeting
  • encounter

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: 2 Kings 5:26 (did not my heart go with you, when the man turned from his chariot for meeting you?).

συνάντημα (synantēma)

(see-NAN-dee-mah)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun from συναντάω (G4876, to meet, encounter); that which meets a person — occurrence, event, befalling. Qoheleth's mortality word: "one event meets them all," wise man and fool, man and beast, righteous and wicked — the leveling observation that drives the search beyond the sun.

  • event, occurrence, befalling
  • what meets a man (plague, chance, death)

Septuagint usage

9 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 9:14 (this time I send all My befallings upon your heart — to Pharaoh); 1 Kings 8:37 (whatever plague, whatever befalling comes — Solomon's temple prayer); Ecclesiastes 2:14 (one event meets the wise man and the fool alike); Ecclesiastes 9:2 (one event to the righteous and to the wicked).

συναριθμέω (synarithmeō)

(see-nah-rith-MEH-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to count together, reckon jointly (σύν, together, + ἀριθμέω, to count). From the Passover's household-arithmetic: 'if the household be too few for the lamb, he shall take with himself his neighbor next to him, according to the number of souls — each shall be counted for the lamb according to what suffices him' (Exodus 12:4). No one eats uncounted, and no one is counted without a lamb: the founding meal binds every soul by name to a particular victim, and the lamb's sufficiency sets the guest-list — small houses are merged rather than anyone left out. The reckoning stands over the true feast: 'Christ our Passover has been sacrificed; therefore let us keep the feast' (1 Corinthians 5:7-8; John 1:29).

  • to count together
  • to reckon to

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 12:4 (he shall include with himself the neighbor neighboring him, according to the number of souls; each shall be counted for the sheep, according to what is sufficient for him).

συναυλίζομαι (synaulizomai)

(see-nahv-LEE-zo-meh)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to lodge together with, share quarters (σύν, with, + αὐλή, court; the slot sits beside συναρπάζω by numbering only). The roommate-rule: 'do not be companion to a man given to rage, and with a friend prone to anger do not lodge — lest you learn his ways and take snares to your own soul' (Proverbs 22:24-25). Anger is contagious at close range; temperament transfers through shared walls, and the proverb treats the transfer as certain enough to legislate the lease. The principle is the epistles' — 'bad company corrupts good morals' (1 Corinthians 15:33) — and its positive is equally strong: he who walks with the wise becomes wise (Proverbs 13:20).

  • to lodge with
  • to share quarters

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Proverbs 22:24 (be not a companion to a man inclined to rage, and do not lodge with a friend prone to anger).

  • conspiracy
  • banding together

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: 1 Kings 16:20 (the rest of the words of Zimri, and his associations which he banded together — behold, are they not written in the scroll of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?); 2 Kings 10:34 (the rest of the words of Jehu, and all which he did, and all his associations — behold, are these not written upon the scroll of the words of the days of the kings of Israel?).

συνδειπνέω (syndeipneō)

(seen-deep-NEH-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to dine with, share a table (σύν + δεῖπνον, supper). Two guarded tables: the Egyptians who could not dine with the Hebrews — 'an abomination to the Egyptians' — even at Joseph's own banquet, and the sage's warning not to dine with an envious man whose bread is grudged.

  • to dine with
  • to share a table

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Genesis 43:32 (they set a place for Joseph alone, and for his brothers alone, and for the Egyptians dining with him alone — for the Egyptians were not able to eat bread with the Hebrews; for it is an abomination to the Egyptians); Proverbs 23:6 (do not dine with an envious man, nor desire his foods).

συνδοιάζω (syndoiazō)

(seen-dee-AH-zo)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to join company with, consort (σύν, with, + the δοιάζω stem; the slot sits beside συνδέω by numbering only). From the evening-incense psalm: 'incline not my heart to words of wickedness, to make excuses for sins with men who work lawlessness — and let me in no way join with their choice ones' (Psalm 141:4). The prayer knows temptation's usual door: not the crime but the company, and not the company's worst but its 'choice ones' — the attractive, plausible elite of the wrong crowd. So the guard is prayed for at the source: watch over my mouth, keep the door of my lips (141:2-3), and let the righteous strike me in kindness instead (141:5; Psalm 1:1).

  • to join company with
  • to consort

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Psalms 141:4 (you should not turn aside my heart to words of wickedness, to make excuses for sins with men working lawlessness; and in no way shall I associate myself with their choice ones).

σύνεγγυς (synengys)

(SEEN-eng-geess)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Adverb — close by, in the vicinity (σύν + ἐγγύς, near; the slot sits beside συνδρομή by numbering only). The itinerary's quiet line: 'and we abode in the glen near the house of Peor' (Deuteronomy 3:29). The address is loaded twice over: Beth-peor is where Israel would fall to Baal-peor's seduction (Numbers 25:1-3; Deuteronomy 4:3 — 'your eyes have seen what the LORD did at Baal-peor'), and it is where Moses himself was buried — 'in the valley opposite Beth-peor, and no man knows his grave' (Deuteronomy 34:6). One glen holds both the memory of the snare and the grave of the meekest man: camps pitched near temptation require the watchfulness the story goes on to preach (1 Corinthians 10:8, 12).

  • close by
  • in the vicinity

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Deuteronomy 3:29 (and we laid in wait in a grove in the vicinity of the house of Peor).

συνεδριάζω (synedriazō)

(see-neh-dree-AH-zo)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to sit in council together (σύν + ἕδρα, seat — kin to συνέδριον, the council). The LXX's seating-chart proverb: 'every lawbreaker is unclean before the LORD, and he does not sit in council with the righteous' (Proverbs 3:32 — the Hebrew turns the same coin over: the devious are abomination to the LORD, 'but his intimate counsel is with the upright'). Read together the two texts give both directions of one fellowship: the crooked are outside the session, and the upright are inside God's own confidence — His sod, His secret (Psalm 25:14; Amos 3:7). The Lord seats His friends at the table of disclosure: 'no longer do I call you servants... all that I heard from my Father I have made known to you' (John 15:15).

  • to sit in council
  • to session together

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Proverbs 3:32 (for every lawbreaker is unclean before the LORD, and with the righteous they do not sit together).

συνέδριον (synédrion)

(soon-ed'-ree-on | soon-EH-three-one | syoon-A-three-one)

Definition

neuter of a presumed derivative of a compound of G4862 and the base of G1476; a joint session, i.e., (specially), the Jewish Sanhedrin; by analogy, a subordinate tribunal; council.

  • any assembly (especially of magistrates, judges, ambassadors), whether convened to deliberate or pass judgment
  • any session or assembly or people deliberating or adjudicating
    • the Sanhedrin, the great council at Jerusalem, consisting of the seventy one members (namely, scribes, elders, prominent members of the high priestly families and the high priest, the president of the assembly)
    • a smaller tribunal or council which every Jewish town had for the decision of less important cases

Note

The most important causes were brought before this tribunal, inasmuch as the Roman rulers of Judaea had left to it the power of trying such cases, and also of pronouncing sentence of death, with the limitation that a capital sentence pronounced by the Sanhedrin was not valid unless it was confirmed by the Roman procurator.

G4899.1

συνεκπολεμέω (synekpolemeō)

(see-nek-po-leh-MEH-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to join in making war against, war on another's side (σύν + ἐκπολεμέω). Deuteronomy's holy-war pledge in both occurrences: "the LORD your God, the one going before your face — He shall join in making war against them with you." The battle-promise repeated by Moses and by the anointed priest at the front line.

  • to join in war against
  • to fight for

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Deuteronomy 1:30 ("the LORD your God, the one going before your face, He shall join in making war against them with you — according to all He did for you in the land of Egypt"); Deuteronomy 20:4 ("for it is the LORD your God who goes forth with you — to join in war with you against your enemies, to preserve you").

G4899.2

συνεκπορεύομαι (synekporeuomai)

(see-nek-po-REV-o-my)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to go forth together with (σύν + ἐκπορεύομαι). The Judges' two departures: the worthless men who went out with Jephthah the outcast, and the Spirit of the LORD who 'began to go forth with' Samson in the camp of Dan — companionship as the shape of a calling.

  • to go forth with
  • to accompany out

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Judges 11:3 (Jephthah fled from the face of his brothers and dwelt in the land of Tob — and worthless men gathered to Jephthah, and went forth together with him); Judges 13:25 (the Spirit of the LORD began to go forth with him in the camp of Dan, between Zorah and Eshtaol).

G4899.3

συνεκτρέφω (synektrephō)

(see-nek-TREH-fo)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to bring up together, rear alongside (σύν + ἐκτρέφω). Both occurrences are Rehoboam's fatal counselors: the young men 'brought up with him' whose bravado answered the assembly and tore the kingdom — companionship of the cradle outweighing the elders of the throne.

  • to bring up together
  • to rear alongside

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: 2 Chronicles 10:8 (he forsook the counsel of the elders which they gave him — and consulted with the young men brought up with him, the ones standing before him); 2 Chronicles 10:10 (the young men having been brought up with him answered — "thus shall you say to the people... my little finger is thicker than my father's loin").

G4900.1

συνελκύω (synelkyō)

(see-nel-KEE-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to drag away together (σύν, together with, + ἑλκύω, to draw — the drawing-verb of John 6:44 and 12:32). The plea against a shared verdict: 'do not drag me away together with sinners, and with workers of injustice do not destroy me together — who speak peace with their neighbors, but evils are in their hearts' (Psalm 28:3). David fears the sweep-net of judgment — being hauled in with the company he refused (Psalm 26:9) — and the verb family holds the whole doctrine of destiny: everyone is drawn by something. Dragged with sinners, or drawn by the Father to the Son — 'no one can come to me unless the Father draws him' (John 6:44) — the difference is the Puller (Hosea 11:4; John 12:32).

  • to drag together with
  • to haul away with

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Psalms 28:3 (do not draw me together with sinners, and with ones working injustice do not destroy me together — of the ones speaking peace with their neighbors, but evils are in their hearts).

G4900.2

συνεξαίρω (synexairō)

(see-nex-EH-ro)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to lift away together, sweep off with (σύν + ἐξαίρω, to remove). From Eliphaz's night-oracle on mortality: dwellers in houses of clay, crushed before the moth — 'he swept away their remnant in them; they perished because they had no wisdom' (Job 4:19-21; the figure beneath is the tent-cord pulled, the dwelling folded in a day). The oracle's mortality-report is sound even where its application to Job is not: man's tent strikes quickly (Isaiah 38:12), and to die without wisdom is the one irreversible poverty (Psalm 90:12 — 'teach us to number our days'). The gospel answers the folding tent with a building from God, eternal in the heavens (2 Corinthians 5:1).

  • to sweep away together
  • to lift off with

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Job 4:21 (he raised up together their vestige in them; they perished by their not having wisdom).

G4900.3

συνεξέρχομαι (synexerchomai)

(see-nex-ER-kho-meh)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to go out together with (σύν, with, + ἐξέρχομαι, to go out). The council-hygiene proverb: 'cast out the pestilent one from the council, and strife shall go out together with him — for whenever he sits in the council, he dishonors all' (Proverbs 22:10). Strife is personified as the scorner's traveling companion: it entered with him and it leaves with him; the quarrel was never free-standing. Remove the carrier and the fever breaks (Proverbs 26:20 — 'where there is no talebearer, strife ceases'). The discipline is apostolic: 'purge the evil person from among you' (1 Corinthians 5:13) — severity in the service of the assembly's peace (Titus 3:10-11).

  • to go out together
  • to depart with

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Proverbs 22:10 (cast out from the sanhedrin the mischievous one, and altercation shall go out together with him; for whenever he sits in the sanhedrin, he dishonors all).

G4900.4

συνεπακολουθέω (synepakoloutheō)

(see-nep-ah-ko-loo-THEH-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to follow closely along after (σύν + ἐπακολουθέω). The Kadesh verdict in both occurrences: none of the men who came up out of Egypt shall see the sworn land — except Caleb and Joshua, 'for they followed closely after the LORD.' Wholehearted following as the single exception to a generation's forfeit.

  • to follow closely after
  • to follow fully

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Numbers 32:11 ("surely these men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years and up, shall not see the land which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — for they did not follow together after Me"); Numbers 32:12 ("except Caleb son of Jephunneh, the one set apart, and Joshua son of Nun — for he followed closely after the LORD").
