G2601.1

καταβιόω (katabioō)

(kah-tah-vee-O-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to live out one's days, spend one's life (κατά + βίος, life); imperative here. Amaziah's deportation order to Amos: 'Seer, go — withdraw to the land of Judah, and spend your life there, and prophesy there' (Amos 7:12) — Bethel's priest treating prophecy as a trade best practiced where it is paid ('eat bread there'), and the king's chapel as a no-prophecy zone (Amos 7:13). Amos's answer dismantles the premise: 'I was no prophet, nor a prophet's son — I was a herdsman, and the LORD took me from behind the flock' (Amos 7:14-15). A calling is not a career; it cannot be transferred by expulsion (Acts 4:19-20).

  • to spend one's life
  • to live out one's days

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Amos 7:12 (proceed! withdraw into the land of Judah, and there spend your life! and there you shall prophesy).

(kah-tah-VLEH-po)

Definition

Two downward looks at the edges of divine visitation: the visitors at Mamre rising to look down on Sodom before its judgment — and Moses at the bush, turning his face away, for he was reverent to look down before God.

  • to look down
  • to gaze upon

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Genesis 18:16 (the men rising up from there looked down upon the face of Sodom and Gomorrah — and Abraham went with them, escorting them); Exodus 3:6 ("I am the God of your father — the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob" — and Moses turned his face away, for he was reverent to look down before God).

  • to cry out (to, against)
  • to raise an outcry

Septuagint usage

4 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 5:15 (the foremen of the sons of Israel cried out to Pharaoh — "why do you deal thus with your servants?"); Exodus 22:23 ("if you afflict the widow or the orphan at all, and they cry out to Me, I will surely hear their cry"); Exodus 22:27 (the cloak taken in pledge — "when he cries out to Me, I will hear, for I am compassionate").

  • to graze down
  • to feed over

Septuagint usage

3 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 22:5 (all three occurrences in the one statute — if anyone causes a field or vineyard to be grazed down, and lets his beast loose to graze down another man's field, he shall repay from his own field according to its produce; from the best of his field and vineyard he shall make restitution).

Rachel and Leah's verdict on their father: 'are we not counted as foreigners to him? For he has sold us, and has utterly devoured our silver' (Genesis 31:15) — daughters priced as merchandise, their bride-wealth consumed instead of settled on them. Laban's fourteen years of extracted labor (Genesis 31:41) sit behind the complaint; the God of Bethel had watched every year of it (Genesis 31:12, 42) — the Father who does not consume His children but is spent for them (2 Corinthians 12:14).

  • to devour
  • to consume utterly

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Nehemiah 2:3 ("why should my face not be downcast? — the city, the house of the tombs of my fathers, is desolate, and her gates were devoured by fire"); Ezekiel 39:4 ("upon the mountains of Israel you shall fall, you and all the ones with you — and to the birds, to every winged creature, and to all the wild beasts of the plain I have given you to be devoured").

Salvation's architecture is roomy and single-entried at once — many decks, one way in (John 10:9; 1 Peter 3:20).

  • ground-level

κατάγελως (katagelōs)

(kah-TAH-gheh-los)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — derision, mocking laughter (from καταγελάω, to laugh down). From Micah's punning dirge over the lowland towns: 'you in Gath, do not magnify yourselves; you in Baca, do not rebuild your house with laughter — strew earth upon your laughter' (Micah 1:10) — dust thrown where laughing was, the mourner's handful ending the joke. The line opens with David's old lament-rule, 'tell it not in Gath' (2 Samuel 1:20): grief kept from the scoffers. Laughter and dust trade places on God's calendar — 'let your laughter be turned to mourning' now (James 4:9), that mourning may be turned to dancing after (Psalm 30:11).

  • derision
  • mocking laughter

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Micah 1:10 (O ones in Gath, do not magnify yourselves! Strew earth on your laughter!).

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to grow old, reach old age (κατά + γηράσκω, to age). The carried people's promise: 'until old age, I AM; and until you grow aged, I AM. I bear with you. I made, and I shall spare; I shall take you up, and I shall save you' (Isaiah 46:4) — spoken over against Bel and Nebo, gods that must be hauled on ox-carts and 'cannot save the burden' (Isaiah 46:1-2). Idols are carried; the LORD carries. The doubled ἐγώ εἰμι ('I AM') holds the whole span from womb to white hair (Isaiah 46:3) — the same voice that says 'before Abraham was, I am' (John 8:58) and 'I am with you all the days' (Matthew 28:20).

  • to grow old
  • to reach old age

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Isaiah 46:4 (until old age, I am; and until whenever you should become aged, I am; I endure you — I made, and I shall spare; I shall take up and I shall deliver you).

  • to occupy, dwell

(kah-TAH-des-mos)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a bandage, binding-dressing (κατά + δεσμός, bond). The book keeps the case open until the Physician appears in it: 'by His stripes we are healed' (Isaiah 53:5) — and the gospel's Samaritan supplies the missing treatment line by line, binding wounds, pouring oil (Luke 10:34; Psalm 147:3).

  • bandage
  • binding-dressing

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Isaiah 1:6 (neither wound, nor stripe, nor inflamed wound are healed; there is no dressing to place upon it, nor oil, nor bandages).

  • to accept
  • to receive favorably

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 35:5 ("take from among yourselves an offering to the LORD — everyone accepting it in the heart shall bring the first-fruit offerings to the LORD: gold, silver, brass").

The low point of Lamentations before its hinge: 'I shall remember, and my soul will muse down upon me' (Lamentations 3:20) — memory of wormwood and gall replayed until the soul sinks under its own recital. The very next breath is the book's turn: 'this I recall to my heart, therefore I will hope: the mercies of the LORD are not consumed... new every morning' (Lamentations 3:21-23) — rumination interrupted by a better remembering (Psalm 42:5-6).

The response-line of Hezekiah's wall-speech: 'with him are arms of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God, to save and to fight our war — and the people took courage upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah' (2 Chronicles 32:8). Sennacherib's arithmetic was correct and irrelevant; courage transferred through a true word about God outweighed an army (2 Chronicles 32:21; the theology compressed at 2 Kings 6:16, 'those with us are more').

  • to take courage
  • to rely with confidence

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: 2 Chronicles 32:8 (with him are arms of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God, to deliver and to wage our war; and the people relied with confidence upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah).

The circle closed on a sleeping strongman fails at midnight: Samson rises, tears out gate, posts, and bar, and carries them to the hill before Hebron (Judges 16:3) — the surrounded deliverer walking out through the gate itself. The pattern's full weight lands on the watched and sealed tomb (Matthew 27:66-28:2; Psalm 107:16, 'he shattered the gates of bronze').

  • to encircle
  • to surround completely

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Judges 16:2 (and they encircled, and laid in wait for him the entire night at the gate of the city).

(kah-tah-kee-LEE-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to roll down (κατά + κυλίω). Jonathan's faith-word before the garrison — "behold, we will roll down to them" — two men against an army because nothing hinders the LORD from saving by many or by few — and the LORD's sentence on the destroying mountain, Babylon rolled down from her rocks.

  • to roll down

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: 1 Samuel 14:8 ("behold, we will roll down to the men — and we shall appear to them"); Jeremiah 51:25 ("behold, I am against you, O ruined mountain, the one destroying the whole earth — and I will stretch out My hand upon you, and I will roll you down from the rocks, and I will make you as a burnt mountain").

κατακύπτω (katakyptō)

(kah-tah-KEEP-to)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to stoop forward and look down (κατά + κύπτω, to bend). The window-scene at Jezreel: Jehu 'lifted his face to the window and saw her, and said, Who are you? Come down to me! And two eunuchs stooped forward to look down at him' (2 Kings 9:32) — Jezebel painted and enthroned at her window, and the servants' downward glance deciding which word they would obey. The throwing-down follows, 'according to the word of the LORD which he spoke by Elijah' (2 Kings 9:33-36; 1 Kings 21:23) — a generation late by men's clocks, exact by God's (Ecclesiastes 8:11-13).

  • to stoop and look down
  • to lean down

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: 2 Kings 9:32 (and he lifted up his face unto the window, and he beheld her; and two eunuchs stooped forward to look down at him).

G2641.1

κατάλειψις (kataleipsis)

(kah-TAH-lipe-sis)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a remnant-survival, what is left remaining (from καταλείπω, to leave behind; doubled in this verse with κατάλειμμα, remnant). Joseph's theology of his own slavery: 'God sent me before you, that a remnant may be left to you upon the earth, and to nourish for you a great survival' (Genesis 45:7) — the sold brother re-narrated as advance man of preservation ('you sold me... God sent me,' 45:5, 8). Here the Bible's remnant-doctrine takes its first full breath: God keeping a seed alive through catastrophe (Isaiah 1:9; Romans 11:5) — by means of a rejected brother exalted to the right hand of power (Acts 7:9-14).

  • remnant-survival
  • what is left

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Genesis 45:7 (for God sent me in front of you, that there may be left to you a vestige upon the earth, and to nourish for you a great remnant).

G2641.2

καταλέω (kataleō)

(kah-tah-LEH-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to grind down fine (κατά + ἀλέω, to grind). Both occurrences grind the same idol: Moses took the calf, burned it with fire, and ground it fine — the retold act of Deuteronomy adding "exceedingly, until it became as dust" — the thoroughness of true repentance's iconoclasm.

  • to grind down
  • to pulverize

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 32:20 (he took the calf which they made and incinerated it in fire — and ground it fine, and sowed it upon the water, and made the sons of Israel drink it); Deuteronomy 9:21 ("your sin which you made — the calf — I took and incinerated it in fire, and beat it, grinding it down exceedingly until it became fine; and it became as dust, and I tossed the dust into the rushing stream descending from the mountain").

G2641.3

κατάληψις (katalēpsis)

(kah-TAH-lape-sis)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a taking, seizure, capture (κατά + λαμβάνω, to seize). From the siege-law: 'if you besiege a city many days, warring against it for its capture, you shall not destroy its trees by lifting iron against them — you shall eat from them, but not cut them down' (Deuteronomy 20:19). Even the vocabulary of conquest is fenced by stewardship: the objective ('capture') may not justify the means (an orchard's destruction). Warfare under Torah remains creation-aware — the tree is not the enemy (Deuteronomy 20:19b), and the LORD's own conquests end with vines and fig trees kept, not burned (Micah 4:3-4).

  • capture
  • seizure

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Deuteronomy 20:19 (but if you should besiege around a city many days to wage war against it for taking it, you shall not utterly destroy its trees by putting upon them an iron axe).

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to stone down, overwhelm with stones (κατά + λιθοβολέω). • to stone utterly
  • to cast stones at

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 17:4 (Moses yelled to the LORD, saying — "what shall I do with this people? Yet a little while and they will cast stones at me"); Numbers 14:10 (the whole congregation spoke to stone them with stones — and the glory of the LORD appeared in a cloud over the tent of the testimony to all the sons of Israel).

G2642.2

κατάλιθος (katalithos)

(kah-TAH-lee-thos)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Adjective — set close with stones, inlaid with precious stones (κατά + λίθος). Both occurrences describe one glory: the breastplate of judgment woven full of stone-inlay, four rows of stones — the names of the sons of Israel carried over the high priest's heart into the holy place.

  • inlaid with stones

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 28:17 (you shall weave in it a woven-work inlaid with precious stones — four rows of stones; a row of sardius, topaz, and emerald the first row); Exodus 39:10 (the parallel execution — the breastplate work inlaid with precious stones, the four rows set as the LORD gave orders to Moses).

(kah-tah-leem-BAH-no)

Definition

Three abandonments: the garment left as false evidence, the idols left on the battlefield, and the commandments of the LORD left for the Baals.

  • to leave behind
  • to forsake

Septuagint usage

3 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Genesis 39:16 (Potiphar's wife left his garment beside her until his master came home — the evidence of her lie); 2 Samuel 5:21 (the Philistines left their idols behind at Baal-perazim — and David and his men carried them away); 1 Kings 18:18 (Elijah to Ahab — "I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father's house — in your leaving the commandments of the LORD and going after the Baals").

καταλογίζομαι (katalogizomai)

(kah-tah-lo-GHEE-zo-my)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to be reckoned among, counted in with (κατά + λογίζομαι, to reckon). The reception awaiting the king of Babylon in Sheol: 'all shall answer and say to you, You also were captured as we — and are you reckoned among us?' (Isaiah 14:10) — the shades' astonished arithmetic as the world-shaker is filed with the powerless, maggots for bedding and worm for covering (Isaiah 14:11). It is the ledger-scene of the taunt-song that peaks at 'Day Star, fallen from heaven' (Isaiah 14:12-15): all self-exaltation ends re-reckoned downward (Luke 10:18; 14:11).

  • to be reckoned among

καταλοχία (katalochia)

(kah-tah-lo-KHEE-ah)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — enrollment by companies, register of divisions (κατά + λόχος, company). From the machinery of Hezekiah's revival: the temple-portions were distributed 'by enrollment, in all the genealogy of their sons and their daughters, in the entire multitude — for in faithfulness they sanctified the holy things' (2 Chronicles 31:18). Revival that lasts grows ledgers: storerooms, officers, genealogies, every priest's child on the roll (2 Chronicles 31:11-19). The register is doctrine in table form — God's service feeds its servants' households by name (1 Corinthians 9:13-14), and heaven itself keeps enrollment (Luke 10:20).

  • enrollment by divisions
  • register

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: 2 Chronicles 31:18 (in classification, in all the genealogy of their sons and their daughters, in the entire multitude; for in trust they sanctified the holy things).

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. From the verdict on Edom: 'hear the plan of the LORD which he planned against Edom... Surely the least of the sheep shall be dragged off; surely their resting-place shall be made desolate over them' (Jeremiah 49:20) — the fold itself unmade, no pen left to return to at dusk. Edom's crag-security (Jeremiah 49:16) ends without a lodging — while the flock of the LORD is promised the opposite: 'they shall lie down in a good fold' (Ezekiel 34:14-15; Psalm 23:2).

  • lodging
  • resting-place

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Jeremiah 49:20 (surely the least of the sheep shall be scraped away; surely their resting-place shall be made impassable over them).

  • to dissolve, disunite
    • (what has been joined together), to destroy, demolish
    • metaphorically to overthrow i.e., render vain, deprive of success, bring to naught
      • to subvert, overthrow
        • of institutions, forms of government, laws, etc., to deprive of force, annul, abrogate, discard
    • of travellers, to halt on a journey, to put up, lodge (the figurative expression originating in the circumstance that, to put up for the night, the straps and packs of the beasts of burden are unbound and taken off; or, more correctly from the fact that the traveller's garments, tied up when he is on the journey, are unloosed at it end)

καταμίγνυμι (katamignymi)

(kah-tah-MIG-nee-mee)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to mix in, intermingle throughout (κατά + μίγνυμι, to mix); perfect passive participle here. From the ephod's goldsmithing: 'you shall make two bordered fringes of pure gold, intermingled with flowers, a work of wreathen craft; and you shall place them upon the shoulder-pieces' (Exodus 28:14) — chains of pure gold braided through with blossom-work, the priest's shoulders carrying stone-set names by cords that are themselves garden-and-glory. Sanctuary craftsmanship keeps quoting Eden (flowers, gold, guarded entry — Exodus 25:31-34; Genesis 2:11-12): the priest walks toward God dressed as the garden regained (Hebrews 9:24).

  • to intermingle
  • to mix throughout

  • to deride
  • to mock

Septuagint usage

κατανέμομαι (katanemomai)

(kah-tah-NEH-mo-my)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to graze down, feed upon (κατά + νέμω, to pasture). The vine-psalm's trespasser: 'the boar from the forest laid her waste, and the solitary wild beast grazes her down' (Psalm 80:13) — the vine carried out of Egypt, planted, and walled (Psalm 80:8-11), now browsed by whatever pushes through the breach. The psalm's remedy escalates from a repaired fence to a Person: 'let your hand be upon the man of your right hand, upon the son of man you strengthened for yourself' (Psalm 80:17) — answered by the true Vine no boar can root out (John 15:1).

  • to graze down
  • to feed upon

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Psalms 80:13 (the pig from the forest laid her waste, and the solitary wild boar feeds on her).

κατανίσταμαι (katanistamai)

(kah-tah-NIS-tah-my)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to rise up against (κατά + ἀνίστημι, to rise). Korah's manifesto: 'all the congregation are holy, every one, and the LORD is among them — why do you rise up against the assembly of the LORD?' (Numbers 16:3) — rebellion drafted in liturgical language, mutiny wearing the vocabulary of holiness. The answer is left to God: 'in the morning the LORD will show who is his' (Numbers 16:5) — and the ground's mouth renders the verdict on rising-up (Numbers 16:31-33). The New Testament files the pattern under its permanent warning: 'the rebellion of Korah' (Jude 11).

  • to rise up against
  • to stand against

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Numbers 16:3 (all the congregation are all holy, and the LORD is among them; and why do you stand against the congregation of the LORD?).

κατάντημα (katantēma)

(kah-TAN-tee-mah)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — an arrival, destination reached (from καταντάω, to arrive). The sun's itinerary in the heavens-psalm: 'from one tip of heaven is his going forth, and his arrival is unto the other tip of heaven — and there is no one who shall be hidden from his heat' (Psalm 19:6) — the bridegroom-sun (19:5) running the full arc, no hemisphere unvisited. Paul borrows this psalm's reach for the gospel's: 'their voice has gone out into all the earth' (Psalm 19:4 at Romans 10:18) — and the risen 'sun of righteousness' (Malachi 4:2) makes the same complete circuit, light arriving everywhere (Luke 1:78-79).

  • arrival

  • severe sorrow, extreme grief
  • insensibility or torpor of mind, such as extreme grief easily produces
    • hence a "spirit of stupor", which renders their souls torpid so insensible that they are not affected at all by the offer made them of salvation through the Messiah

καταξαίνω (kataxainō)

(kah-tah-XEH-no)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to card down, tear in shreds as wool through thorns (κατά + ξαίνω, to card). (kah-tah-xee-REH-no)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to dry up utterly (κατά + ξηραίνω). Rahab's creed and Hosea's sentence: "the LORD totally dried up the water of the Red Sea from your face" — the exodus-fact that felled Jericho's courage — and the east wind of the LORD that shall dry up Ephraim's springs and veins.

  • to dry up utterly

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Joshua 2:10 ("for we have heard that the LORD God totally dried up the water of the Red Sea from your face, when you went forth out of the land of Egypt"); Hosea 13:15 (the LORD shall bring a burning wind from the wilderness upon him — and it shall totally dry up his veins, and make quite desolate his springs).

G2660.3

κατάξηρος (kataxēros)

(kah-TAH-xee-ros)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Adjective — utterly dried up, parched through (κατά + ξηρός, dry). The craving-camp's self-diagnosis: 'but now our soul is dried up; nothing except this manna before our eyes' (Numbers 11:6) — heaven's daily bread reclassified as deprivation by appetites keeping Egypt's menu in memory (Numbers 11:5). The dryness was real; its cause was misfiled — not the manna's poverty but the palate's exile. The true Bread meets the same weariness ('what sign do you do?... our fathers ate manna') and answers it: 'I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger' (John 6:30-35).

  • utterly dried up
  • parched

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Numbers 11:6 (but now our soul is dried up; there is nothing except for the manna before our eyes).

καταπαίζω (katapaizō)

(kah-tah-PEH-zo)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to mock at, make sport of (κατά, against + παίζω, to play). The Bethel boys against Elisha, Memphis and Tahpanhes against faithless Judah — and a whole society where each man mocks his neighbor and truth dies.

  • to mock
  • to make sport of

Septuagint usage

3 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: 2 Kings 2:23 (as Elisha went up to Bethel, small boys came out of the city and mocked him — "go up, baldhead! go up, baldhead!"); Jeremiah 2:16 (the sons of Memphis and Tahpanhes knew you — and they mocked you); Jeremiah 9:5 (each one mocks his friend, and they do not speak truth — they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves committing iniquity).

G2661.2

καταπανουργεύομαι (katapanourgeuomai)

(kah-tah-pah-noor-GHEV-o-my)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to deal craftily against, scheme with cunning (κατά + πανουργεύομαι, from πανοῦργος, crafty). The confederacy psalm's opening charge: 'against your people they dealt craftily in design, and consulted against your holy ones — they said, Come, let us obliterate them from being a nation' (Psalm 83:3-4) — ten allied names drafted for one erasure (Psalm 83:5-8). The psalm answers cunning with petition, not counter-plot: 'that they may seek your name, O LORD' (Psalm 83:16) — and the people marked 'your hidden ones' (83:3, Hebrew) stay unerasable, kept where no confederacy reaches (Colossians 3:3; Matthew 16:18).

  • to scheme craftily against
  • to conspire

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Psalms 83:3 (against your people they dealt treacherously in design, and consulted against your holy ones).

G2661.3

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to strew upon, sprinkle over (κατά, upon + πάσσω, to sprinkle). The gesture-word of grief: dust and ashes strewn on the head — Mordecai's, Job's friends', and the mourning the prophets command.

  • to strew (dust, ashes)
  • to sprinkle upon

Septuagint usage

4 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Esther 4:1 (Mordecai tore his clothes, put on sackcloth, and strewed ashes on himself — the bitter cry in the city); Job 2:12 (the three friends wept, tore their robes, and sprinkled dust on their heads toward heaven); Jeremiah 6:26 ("O daughter of my people, gird on sackcloth and strew yourself in ashes — mourn as for an only son"); Micah 1:10 ("in Beth-le-aphrah — the house of dust — strew yourselves with dust").

  • a trampling down
  • a thing trodden underfoot

Septuagint usage

9 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Isaiah 5:5 (the vineyard's hedge removed — it shall be for trampling); Isaiah 22:5 (a day of trouble and trampling in the valley of vision); Isaiah 28:18 (your covenant with death annulled — you shall be for it a trampling); Micah 7:10 (my enemy shall become a trampling like mire of the streets).

καταπάτησις (katapatēsis)

(kah-tah-PAH-tee-sis)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a trampling, treading-down (from καταπατέω, to trample). The inventory of Jehoahaz's Israel: 'there was not left to him a people, but only fifty horsemen and ten chariots and ten thousand footmen; for the king of Syria destroyed them, and made them as dust for trampling' (2 Kings 13:7) — a national army reduced to road-dust. Yet the same paragraph holds the counterweight: 'the LORD was gracious to them, and pitied them, and turned toward them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and was not willing to destroy them' (2 Kings 13:23) — trodden nearly to nothing, kept entirely by covenant (Lamentations 3:22; Isaiah 63:9).

  • trampling
  • treading-down

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: 2 Kings 13:7 (for the king of Syria destroyed them, and he appointed them as dust for trampling).

καταπελματόομαι (katapelmatoomai)

(kah-tah-pel-mah-TO-o-my)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to be re-soled, patched on the sole (κατά + πέλμα, the sole of the foot); perfect participle in the Gibeonite costume-list: 'their sandals old and patched on their feet, and their garments old upon them, and the bread of their provision dry and moldy' (Joshua 9:5). The patched soles sold the fiction of a distant journey — stagecraft aimed precisely at the treaty-clause for far cities (Deuteronomy 20:15; Joshua 9:6, 9). Israel inspected the shoes and skipped the inquiry (Joshua 9:14); the LORD's counsel, not the props, was the missing verification (Proverbs 3:5-6).

  • patched on the sole
  • re-soled

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Joshua 9:5 (and their sandals old and mended on their feet, and their garments being old upon them, and the bread loaves of their provisions were dry and moldy).

καταπενθέω (katapentheō)

(kah-tah-pen-THEH-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to mourn deeply, grieve down (κατά, intensive + πενθέω, to mourn). Israel's response to the worst sentence in Exodus: 'I will not go up in your midst, lest I consume you in the way' — 'and the people, hearing this severe word, mourned in mourning' (Exodus 33:3-4), stripping off their ornaments at Horeb (33:6). The grief is exactly calibrated: not over lost Canaan but lost company — and it fuels Moses' greatest intercession: 'if your presence does not go, do not bring us up from here' (Exodus 33:15). The mourning that will not settle for blessings without the Blesser is the mourning that gets comforted (Matthew 5:4; Exodus 33:14).

  • to mourn deeply
  • to grieve

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 33:4 (and the people, hearing this severe saying, mourned in mourning).

καταπέτομαι (katapetomai)

(kah-tah-PEH-to-my)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to fly down and away (κατά + πέτομαι, to fly). Proverbs' portrait of self-exile: 'as a bird when it flies down out of its own nest, so a man is enslaved when he estranges himself from his own places' (Proverbs 27:8) — the LXX sharpening 'wanders' to 'is enslaved': leaving one's given place feels like flight and lands as bondage. It is the prodigal's itinerary in one proverb — the far country reached by wing, endured as a hired hand's chains (Luke 15:13-15) — until the flight home to the place and the Father that were his own (Luke 15:17-20).

  • to fly away
  • to flit from the nest

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Proverbs 27:8 (as a bird whenever it flies down from out of its own nest, so a man is enslaved whenever he estranges himself from out of his own places).

  • to plant firmly

Septuagint usage

3 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: 1 Samuel 31:10 (they put his armor in the house of Ashtaroth — and they firmly fastened his body to the wall of Beth-shan); Hosea 5:2 (the hunters have firmly fastened their trap — slaughter sunk deep by the revolters; "but I am your instructor"); Hosea 9:8 (the watchman of Ephraim was with my God — yet a fowler's snare is firmly fastened on all his ways, hostility in the house of his God).

G2665.3

καταπηδάω (katapēdaō)

(kah-tah-pee-DAH-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to leap down (κατά + πηδάω). Two dismountings at decisive meetings: Rebekah leaping down from the camel at first sight of Isaac — and Naaman leaping down from his chariot to meet running Gehazi, the courtesy of a cleansed man about to be exploited.

  • to leap down
  • to dismount

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Genesis 24:64 (Rebekah, looking up with the eyes, saw Isaac — and she leaped down from the camel); 2 Kings 5:21 (Gehazi hastened after Naaman — and Naaman saw him running after him, and leaped down from the chariot to meet him).

κατάπικρος (katapikros)

(kah-TAH-pik-ros)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Adjective — exceedingly bitter, fierce of soul (κατά, intensive + πικρός, bitter). Hushai's expert testimony on David's veterans: 'you know your father and his men, that they are exceedingly mighty, and very bitter of soul — as a bear robbed of her cubs in the plain' (2 Samuel 17:8) — counsel crafted to frighten Absalom into delay. The speech works because the LORD is working it: 'the LORD gave charge to efface the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that the LORD might bring the evils upon Absalom' (2 Samuel 17:14) — a kingdom's fate steered through one vivid simile in a council room (Proverbs 21:1).

  • exceedingly bitter
  • fierce of soul

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: 2 Samuel 17:8 (that they are exceedingly mighty, and their soul is very bitter, as a bear being made childless in the plain).

καταπιστεύω (katapisteuō)

(kah-tah-pis-TEV-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to trust fully in, confide in (κατά, intensive + πιστεύω, to trust). Micah's collapsed-society advisory: 'do not confide in friends; do not hope in leaders; from her who shares your bed guard the doors of your mouth' (Micah 7:5) — trust rationed to zero as every natural bond turns informer (Micah 7:6, the verse Jesus quotes for the sword His coming brings, Matthew 10:35-36). The prophet's own footing survives the general collapse: 'but I will watch expectantly for the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me' (Micah 7:7) — the one confidence left standing when all the others are compromised (Psalm 118:8-9).

  • to confide in
  • to trust fully

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Micah 7:5 (do not confide in friends; do not hope upon leaders; of your bed-mate watch out to not present anything to her).

  • to plaster over
  • to apply a poultice

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Job 37:11 (and a cloud plasters over the chosen thing — his light shall disperse the cloud); Isaiah 38:21 (Isaiah said — "take a cake of dried figs, and grind it, and plaster it on the boil — and he shall be healthy").

κατάπληξις (kataplēxis)

(kah-TAH-plee-xis)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — terror, consternation (κατά + πλήσσω, to strike — struck-down dread). The emotional weather of the altar's rebuilding: 'they prepared the altar upon its base — for terror was upon them because of the peoples of the lands — and they offered whole burnt-offerings on it to the LORD, in the morning and in the evening' (Ezra 3:3). The grammar is the sermon: the fear is real, parenthetical, and overruled; worship resumes inside the dread, altar before walls, sacrifice before safety. Obedience that does not wait for the fear to pass is the returned exiles' first miracle (Psalm 56:3; 2 Timothy 1:7).

  • terror
  • consternation

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Ezra 3:3 (and they prepared the altar upon its preparation place, for terror was upon them because of the peoples of the lands; and they brought unto it the whole burnt-offerings to the LORD, in the morning and in the evening).

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to war down, fight against to subdual (κατά + πολεμέω, to make war). The tableau is enacted doctrine: today's pinned neck is the pattern of every campaign to come. Scripture keeps the picture and enlarges the referent: 'He must reign until He has put all enemies under His feet' (1 Corinthians 15:25; Psalm 110:1) — and the God of peace crushing Satan under the church's feet shortly (Romans 16:20).

καταποντισμός (katapontismos)

(kah-tah-pon-tis-MOS)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a drowning, plunging into the deep (from καταποντίζω, to sink in the sea — Peter's verb, Matthew 14:30). The psalm against Doeg names his weapon-class: 'you loved all the words of drowning, O deceitful tongue' (Psalm 52:4) — speech engineered to take men under; Doeg's one accurate report drowned eighty-five priests of Nob (1 Samuel 22:9-19). Against the drowning-tongue the psalm sets its counter-image: 'but I am as a flourishing olive tree in the house of God; I trusted in the mercy of God forever' (Psalm 52:8; James 3:5-6).

  • drowning
  • engulfing

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Psalms 52:4 (you loved all the words of drowning, O deceitful tongue).

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to soothe, calm, still (κατά, down + πραΰς, gentle). The stilling-word of Psalm 89 — "You rule the surging of the sea; You soothe the lifting of its waves" — the divine prerogative the Gospels unveil in Christ asleep in the stern. Beside it: the psalmist's plea that God not be soothed into silence, and the patient man who calms a rising quarrel.

  • to soothe, still
  • to calm down

Septuagint usage

3 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Psalms 83:1 ("O God, who is like You? Do not keep silence; do not be soothed into stillness, O God" — while the enemies roar); Psalms 89:9 ("You rule the raging of the sea — the lifting of its waves You soothe"); Proverbs 15:18 (a hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but the longsuffering man soothes even the fight that is rising).

(kah-TAP-to-mah)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a collapse, fallen breach (κατά + πίπτω, to fall). 'Blessed the people for whom it is so — blessed the people whose God is the LORD' (Psalm 144:15): the unbroken fence is the visible edge of an invisible keeping (Psalm 121:7-8; Job 1:10).

  • collapse

The courtyard specification: 'all the posts of the court round about plated with silver, their capitals of silver and their bases of brass' (Exodus 27:17). The construction ledger later discloses where that silver came from: the census half-shekels — 'the ransom for his soul' collected head by head (Exodus 30:12-16) — were cast into the sanctuary's sockets and post-fittings (Exodus 38:25-28). The house of God stood wrapped in redemption-money: every gleaming post-top a receipt that the worshipers inside had been ransomed (1 Peter 1:18-19).

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to make wander about, send roving (κατά + ῥέμβομαι, to roam). The sentence-summary Moses recites to Reuben and Gad: 'the LORD was provoked to anger over Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation doing evil before the LORD was consumed' (Numbers 32:13) — quoted precisely to warn a new generation against repeating Kadesh ('behold, you have risen in place of your fathers,' Numbers 32:14). The wandering was a verb God did to them: itinerary as judgment (Numbers 14:33-34; Hebrews 3:17) — while even that judgment fed and clothed them for forty years (Deuteronomy 8:2-4).

  • to make wander

The ebbing life of Eli's line, David's spittle running down his beard at Gath — and Jeremiah's leaves flowed down from a fruitless vine.

  • to flow down
  • to waste away, fall away

Septuagint usage

3 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: 1 Samuel 2:33 (the word against Eli's house — the man not cut off from My altar will remain to make his eyes fail and his soul flow down wasting away); 1 Samuel 21:13 (David feigning madness before Achish — he drummed on the doors of the gate, and his spittle flowed down upon his beard); Jeremiah 8:13 ("there are no grapes on the vine, no figs on the fig tree — even the leaves have flowed down; and what I gave them has passed away from them").

  • to break down

He hurled down from heaven to earth the glory of Israel, and did not remember the footstool of his feet in the day of the wrath of his rage' (Lamentations 2:1) — Zion falling star-like, the ark-footstool itself unremembered (Psalm 132:7). The height of the privilege set the length of the fall (Amos 3:2). The gospel's inversion: the true Glory of Israel descended willingly — 'He emptied Himself' (Philippians 2:6-8) — so that the hurled-down city could be lifted (Isaiah 40:2; Luke 2:32).

  • to hurl down
  • to cast headlong

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Lamentations 2:1 (he hurled down from out of heaven unto the earth the glory of Israel, and he remembered not the stool of his feet in the day of the wrath of his rage).

(Ezekiel 27:32) — the loudest port on earth, all oar-song and market-din (Ezekiel 26:13), reduced to one held breath of sea-quiet. Silencing is the signature of God's verdict on commercial arrogance; the last Babylon receives it verbatim: 'the sound of harpists and musicians... shall be heard in you no more, and the voice of bridegroom and bride no more' (Revelation 18:22-23; Isaiah 23:8-9).

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to be made small, diminished (κατά + σμικρύνω, from μικρός, small). David's posture inside the covenant just given him: 'and it was made small before you, O my Lord — and you spoke about the house of your servant for a far-distant time; and is this the law of man, O my Lord?' (2 Samuel 7:19) — the everlasting-house promise so exceeding him that even it seems 'a small thing' to the Giver, and David gropes for words: is this the charter for mankind? The astonished question is the point: the promise to David's house was always aimed past David at the Son whose throne is forever (2 Samuel 7:13, 16; Luke 1:32-33) — grace that out-scales its recipient (Ephesians 3:20).

  • to be made small
  • to be diminished

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: 2 Samuel 7:19 (and it was reduced small before you, O my Lord, O LORD, and you spoke about the house of your servant for a far time; and is this the law of man, O my Lord, O LORD?).

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to live in soft luxury, waste down in self-indulgence (κατά + σπαταλάω — the family of James 5:5's ἐσπαταλήσατε). Proverbs' warning that the one pampered from childhood ends a servant and comes to grief — and Amos's woe on the ivory-bed class, living wastefully on their couches while Joseph is broken.

  • to live luxuriously
  • to be pampered

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Proverbs 29:21 (he who lives wastefully from childhood shall be a servant — and in the end shall grieve over himself); Amos 6:4 (woe to the ones sleeping upon beds of ivory and living wastefully upon their beds — the ones eating kids from the flocks and suckling calves from the midst of the herds).

Septuagint usage

3 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Leviticus 19:19 ("you shall keep My statutes — you shall not sow your field abroad with two kinds of seed, nor wear a garment of two kinds of material"); Deuteronomy 22:9 (you shall not sow your vineyard with diverse seed, lest the full produce be forfeited — the seed you sow and the yield of the vineyard); Job 18:15 (Bildad on the wicked man's tent — brimstone shall be scattered as seed over his habitation).

κατασπουδάζομαι (kataspoudazomai)

(kah-tahs-poo-DAH-zo-my)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to be gravely alarmed, take with utmost seriousness (κατά + σπουδάζω, to be earnest). Job on the unfindable God: 'therefore at his face I am sobered; I shall consider, and shall be terrified of him' (Job 23:15) — the same chapter that aches 'O that I knew where I might find him' (23:3) and rests on 'he knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come forth as gold' (23:10). Job's dread is not the terror of the guilty but the vertigo of a small integrity before an unsummonable Judge — the fear resolved only when the Judge becomes findable: 'whoever has seen me has seen the Father' (John 14:9; Hebrews 4:16).

  • to be gravely alarmed
  • to take with utmost seriousness

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Job 23:15 (over this, at his face I should be taken with seriousness; I shall contemplate, and shall be terrified of him).

καταστενάζω (katastenazō)

(kah-tahs-teh-NAH-zoh)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to groan deeply (στενάζω, G4727, intensified). The exodus begins with it — "the sons of Israel groaned under the labor, and their cry went up to God" — and Ezekiel's mark of preservation falls on "the men who groan and grieve over all the abominations."

  • to groan deeply

Septuagint usage

5 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 2:23 (the groaning under slavery rises — and God remembered His covenant); Jeremiah 22:23 (nested in the cedars — you shall groan when pangs come as birth-labor); Ezekiel 9:4 ("set a mark on the foreheads of the men groaning over the abominations"); Ezekiel 21:6 ("groan, son of man, with breaking of loins — before their eyes").

καταστηρίζομαι (katastērizomai)

(kah-tahs-tee-REE-zo-my)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to be firmly fixed, thoroughly established (κατά + στηρίζω, to fix fast). Zophar's timetable for the wicked: 'whenever he should seem already firmly fixed, then unto the end he shall perish; and the ones knowing him shall say, Where is he?' (Job 20:7) — the apparent permanence is itself the cue for the vanishing. The observation is sound Psalter doctrine even on a friend's misapplied lips: 'I saw the wicked towering as the cedars of Lebanon; I passed by, and behold, he was not' (Psalm 37:35-36; 73:18-20). Fixedness belongs elsewhere: 'the one doing the will of God abides forever' (1 John 2:17).

  • to be firmly fixed
  • to seem established

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Job 20:7 (for whenever he should seem already firmly fixed, then unto the end he shall perish; and the ones knowing him shall say, Where is he?).

καταστραγγίζω (katastrangizō)

(kah-tahs-tran-GHEE-zo)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to drain out drop by drop (κατά + στραγγίζω, to squeeze out). From the poor man's sin-offering rubric: the priest 'shall sprinkle from the blood of the sin offering upon the wall of the altar, but the rest of the blood he shall drain out at the base of the altar — for it is a sin offering' (Leviticus 5:9). Nothing of the blood is discarded or casual: what is not sprinkled is deliberately, completely poured to the altar's foundation — atonement accounted to the last drop (Leviticus 4:7; 17:11). The pattern holds to its fulfillment: 'he poured out his soul unto death' (Isaiah 53:12; John 19:34).

  • to drain drop by drop
  • to pour out completely

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Leviticus 5:9 (but the rest of the blood he shall drain out upon the base of the altar — for it is an offering on account of sin).

καταστρατοπεδεύω (katastratopedeuō)

(kah-tahs-trah-to-peh-DEV-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to encamp, pitch camp (κατά + στρατόπεδον, camp). The landing-report of the crossing: 'the people ascended out of the Jordan on the tenth of the first month, and the sons of Israel encamped in Gilgal, toward the sun's rising from Jericho' (Joshua 4:19) — the date is liturgy: the tenth of the first month is lamb-selection day (Exodus 12:3), and this camp will keep the land's first Passover within the week (Joshua 5:10-12). The twelve stones go up at the same site 'that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty' (Joshua 4:20-24) — a campground arranged around remembrance.

  • to encamp
  • to bivouac

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Joshua 4:19 (and the people ascended from out of the Jordan on the tenth of the first month; and the sons of Israel bivouacked in Gilgal, in the part towards the sun rising by Jericho).

κατατάσσω (katatassō)

(kah-tah-TAHS-so)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to arrange down: to appoint, assign, delegate (κατά, down + τάσσω, to order). Job's vocabulary of divine assignment — the guard posted over the sea-monster, the doom assigned to the wicked, and (in the LXX's turn at 35:10, where the Hebrew hears songs in the night) the God who appoints the night watches.

  • to appoint
  • to assign, delegate

Septuagint usage

3 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Job 7:12 ("am I the sea, or a dragon, that You have appointed a guard over me?"); Job 15:23 (the terror-haunted oppressor — he has been assigned as food for vultures; he knows his downfall is near); Job 35:10 (but none says, "where is God my Maker, who appoints the watches of the night?").

G2697.2

κατατείνω (katateinō)

(kah-tah-TEE-no)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to stretch down hard: to strain violently, rule with rigor (κατά, down + τείνω, to stretch). The thrice-repeated bar of Leviticus 25 — Egypt's rigor forbidden inside Israel: "you shall not rule over him with violent straining, but shall fear your God."

  • to strain violently
  • to rule with rigor

Septuagint usage

3 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Leviticus 25:43 ("you shall not rule over him with violent straining — but you shall fear your God"); Leviticus 25:46 (of your brothers the sons of Israel — a man over his brother, you shall not rule over him with violent straining); Leviticus 25:53 (as a yearly hired servant he shall be with him — he shall not rule over him with violent straining in your sight).

κατατέμνω (katatemnō)

(kah-tah-TEM-no)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to gash, cut oneself (κατά, down + τέμνω, to cut). The self-laceration of pagan devotion — forbidden to Aaron's sons, frenzied on Carmel, and exposed by Hosea as prayer that never reaches the heart.

  • to gash oneself
  • to cut, lacerate

Septuagint usage

4 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Leviticus 21:5 (the priests shall not shave their heads nor make gashes in their flesh); 1 Kings 18:28 (the prophets of Baal cried aloud and gashed themselves with swords and lances after their custom, until blood gushed out); Isaiah 15:2 (Moab's wailing — on every head baldness, every beard gashed off); Hosea 7:14 ("they do not cry to Me from their heart, but wail on their beds; they gash themselves for grain and new wine, and turn away from Me").

G2697.4

κατατέρπομαι (kataterpomai)

(kah-tah-TERP-o-my)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to delight oneself utterly (κατά, intensive + τέρπομαι, to delight). The commanded joy of Zephaniah's finale: 'Rejoice, O daughter of Zion! Proclaim aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Be glad and delight yourself with your whole heart!' (Zephaniah 3:14) — a fourfold summons stacked past redundancy, because the news warrants it: judgments removed, the King of Israel in her midst (3:15). Three verses on, the joy is answered in kind and exceeded: 'the LORD your God... will rejoice over you with gladness; he will exult over you with singing' (Zephaniah 3:17) — Zion's whole-hearted delight the echo of God's own (Isaiah 62:5; Luke 15:32).

  • to delight utterly
  • to exult

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Zephaniah 3:14 (be glad and delight yourself with your entire heart, O daughter of Jerusalem!).

G2697.5

κατατήκω (katatēkō)

(kah-tah-TEE-ko)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to melt down, dissolve away (κατά + τήκω, to melt). Zion's threshing-commission: 'Rise up and thresh, O daughter of Zion! For I will make your horns iron and your hoofs brass, and you shall melt down many peoples — and you shall devote their abundance to the LORD, their strength to the Lord of all the earth' (Micah 4:13). The startling grammar: the trampled daughter (4:11, 'let our eye gloat over Zion') is re-equipped as the thresher, and the spoil is not kept but devoted — ḥerem to the Lord of all the earth. Victory in Zion's story always ends at the altar, not the treasury (Psalm 68:18, 29; Revelation 21:24).

  • to melt down
  • to dissolve

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Micah 4:13 (for I will make your horns iron, and your hoofs I will make brass, and you shall dissolve many peoples; and you shall present their abundance to the LORD, even their strength to the Lord of all the earth).

(kah-tah-TIL-lo)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to pluck at, tear repeatedly (κατά + τίλλω, to pluck). From the bottom of Oholibah's cup-oracle: 'you shall drink it and strain it out, and gnaw its potsherds, and tear at your breasts — for I have spoken, says the Lord GOD' (Ezekiel 23:34) — the sister who coveted Samaria's cup receives it to the shards, grief turned physical. The cup 'deep and wide' (23:32) is Scripture's fixed image for wrath measured out (Psalm 75:8; Jeremiah 25:15-17) — the cup another asked to pass from Him, and drank instead: 'shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?' (Matthew 26:42; John 18:11).

  • to pluck at
  • to tear repeatedly

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Ezekiel 23:34 (and you shall drink it and strain it out, and his potsherds you shall devour, and your breasts you shall pull about; for I have spoken, says Adonai the LORD).
