G4302.1

προλήνιον (prolēnion)

(pro-LEE-nee-on)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a fore-vat, the trough dug before the winepress (πρό, before, + ληνός, winepress; the slot sits beside προλέγω by numbering only). From the Song of the Vineyard: the beloved fenced it, planted choice vine, 'built a tower in its midst and dug a wine-vat in it — and waited for it to produce grapes, and it produced thorns' (Isaiah 5:1-2). Every improvement presupposes harvest; the dug vat is faith in fruit that never came. Jesus rebuilds the parable fixture by fixture — hedge, vat, tower — and steps into it as the sent Son (Mark 12:1-8; Matthew 21:33), the true vine His Father dresses (John 15:1).

  • wine-vat
  • fore-trough of the press

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Isaiah 5:2 (and I put a barrier around it, and built a palisade, and planted a choice grapevine, and I built a tower in the midst of it, and I dug a wine press in it; and I waited for it to produce the grape, and it produced thorn-bushes).

G4302.2

πρόλοβος (prolobos)

(PRO-lo-boss)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — the crop of a bird (πρό, before, + λοβός, lobe — the fore-pouch of the gullet). From the rubric for the poorest burnt offering: the turtledove or young pigeon brought by the one who cannot afford the flock animal — 'he shall remove the crop with the feathers and cast them beside the altar eastward, at the place of the ashes' (Leviticus 1:14-16). The two-bird offering has its own exact liturgy: poverty does not get a casual altar. It is this tier Joseph and Mary bring at the presentation of Jesus (Luke 2:24) — the Lord of the temple carried in under the poor man's rubric (2 Corinthians 8:9).

  • crop of a bird
  • gullet-pouch

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Leviticus 1:16 (and he shall remove the crop with the feathers, and cast them by the altar according to the east, into the place of the ashes).

Noun — great-grandfather, forefather (πρό, before, + πάππος, grandfather; the slot sits beside προορίζω by numbering only). The locust ultimatum to Pharaoh: they will fill your houses and your servants' houses 'such as your fathers have never seen, nor their forefathers, from the day they were upon the land until this day' (Exodus 10:6). Judgment beyond ancestral memory — the archive of generations searched and nothing comparable found. Joel opens his locust-oracle on the same register: 'has such a thing happened in your days, or in the days of your fathers? Tell your children of it' (Joel 1:2-3) — memory summoned both to measure the judgment and to carry the warning.

προπετεία (propeteia)

(pro-peh-TEE-ah)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — rashness, headlong haste (abstract of προπετής, precipitate — the NT's word for 'rash' at Acts 19:36 and 'headstrong' at 2 Timothy 3:4; the slot sits beside προπέμπω by numbering). The LXX's name for Uzzah's act: the oxen stumbled, he took hold of the ark, 'and God struck him there for the rashness, and he died there beside the ark' (2 Samuel 6:6-7 — the Hebrew's term is obscure; the Greek renders a verdict). Good intentions do not consecrate unauthorized hands. David learns the lesson as liturgy: 'we did not seek him according to the ordinance' — and the second attempt goes up with Levites, sacrifice, and joy (1 Chronicles 15:2, 13-15).

  • rashness
  • headlong presumption

(pro-PIP-to)

Definition

Both occurrences bow in the two great homage-psalms of the King: Psalm 22's vast finale — all who go down to the dust "shall fall down before Him," the cross-psalm ending in universal worship — and Psalm 72's dominion: before Him Ethiopians shall fall down, and his enemies lick the dust.

  • to fall down before
  • to prostrate

Judgment standing at the doors in both prophets: Amos's vision-command to strike so that the gateways shake — the sanctuary of Bethel falling on its worshipers — and Zephaniah's day of the LORD upon all at the gateways, the officials who fill the house of their lord with fraud.

  • gateway
  • front-porch

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Amos 9:1 ("strike upon the atonement-lid, and the gateways shall be shaken — and cut into the heads of all; and their remnant I will kill with the sword"); Zephaniah 1:9 ("I will take vengeance upon all openly at the gateways in that day — the ones filling the house of the LORD their God with impiety and fraud").

προσανάβασις (prosanabasis)

(pross-ah-NAH-vah-sis)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — an ascent leading up (from προσαναβαίνω, to go up further — Luke 14:10's 'go up higher'). From the survey of Judah's lot: the south border 'passes along before the ascent of Akrabbim, and around Zin, and up to Kadesh-barnea' (Joshua 15:3). The border lists read as tedium and function as title-deed: every ridge and ascent named is promise conveyed — the oath to Abraham cashed out in surveyor's prose (Genesis 15:18; Joshua 21:43-45). The saints still speak in this idiom: 'the lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; indeed, my inheritance is beautiful to me' (Psalm 16:6).

  • ascent
  • way leading up

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Joshua 15:3 (and it travels over before the ascent leading to Acrabbim, and goes around Zin, and ascends from the south upon Kadesh Barnea).

προσαποθνῄσκω (prosapothnēskō)

(pross-ah-po-THNEES-ko)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to die in addition, die besides (πρός, in addition, + ἀποθνῄσκω, to die; the slot sits beside προσδαπανάω by numbering only). The goring-ox statute at its severe hinge: if the ox was known to gore and the owner, duly warned, did not restrain it, and it kills — 'the ox shall be stoned, and its owner shall die in addition' (Exodus 21:29). Foreknowledge creates liability; negligence with warning is bloodguilt. Then the next verse opens the astonishing clause: 'if a ransom should be set upon him, he shall give the redemption-price of his life' (Exodus 21:30) — a life forfeit, and a λύτρον accepted in its place: the statute-book's own grammar for Mark 10:45.

  • to die in addition
  • to die besides

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 21:29 (but if the bull was goring before yesterday and the third day before, and men testified to its owner, and he should not remove it, and it should have done away with a man or a woman — the bull shall be stoned, and its owner shall die in addition).

G4325.2

προσβάλλω (prosballō)

(pross-VAHL-lo)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to strike upon, dash against (πρός, upon, + βάλλω, to cast). The opening of the night visions: 'I Daniel viewed in my vision of the night, and behold, the four winds of the heaven struck upon the great sea' — and out of the churned water the four beasts rise (Daniel 7:2-3). The sea is the nations in tumult (Revelation 17:15), lashed from every compass point; empire is what surfaces from agitated water (Revelation 13:1). The vision holds its nerve because the churning is bounded: thrones are set, the Ancient of Days sits, and dominion passes to one like a son of man (Daniel 7:9, 13-14).

  • to strike upon
  • to dash against

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Daniel 7:2 (I Daniel viewed in my vision of the night, and behold, the four winds of the heaven struck up in the great sea).

G4325.3

πρόσβασις (prosbasis)

(PROSS-vah-sis)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — an approach, way of access (πρός, toward, + the βαίνω stem — a going-toward). From Judah's north border: down 'to Gilgal, which is before the approach of Adummim,' through the valley — the line having just climbed 'to Debir of the ravine of Achor' (Joshua 15:7). The deed-language quietly carries a loaded name: Achor, the valley of Trouble where Achan died (Joshua 7:24-26), is folded into the inheritance — and Hosea takes the same valley up as promise: 'I will give her the valley of Achor for a door of hope' (Hosea 2:15). Even Trouble is surveyed into the estate and re-zoned as hope.

  • approach
  • way of access

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Joshua 15:7 (and the borders ascend unto Debir of the ravine of Achor, and according to the north it goes down to Gilgal, which is before the entrance approach of Adummim).

G4325.4

πρόσβλητος (prosblētos)

(PROSS-vlee-toss)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verbal adjective — beaten on, applied as plating (πρός, onto, + βάλλω, to cast — metal hammered onto a core). From the idol-manufacture satire: 'beaten silver from Tarshish shall come, gold from Uphaz, and the hand of goldsmiths — works of craftsmen all of them; blue and purple they shall clothe them' (Jeremiah 10:9). The exposé is in the participle: the god is plating — imported veneer over a core that is not god, carried because it cannot walk, feared though it can do neither evil nor good (Jeremiah 10:5). Against the laminated deities stands the LORD, 'the true God, the living God, the everlasting King,' who made the earth by His power (Jeremiah 10:10-12).

  • plated
  • hammered on

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Jeremiah 10:9 (silver amalgamated from Tarshish shall come, gold from Uphaz, and by the hand of goldsmiths — works of craftsmen they are all; blue and purple they shall put on them).

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to be added to, attach oneself, join (πρός + γίνομαι). The joined stranger of the holiness laws — the proselyte "uniting himself" among Israel bound by the same statutes — and the one-law principle of the offerings: the convert who joins you shall offer just as you do — the sojourner folded into the worshiping people (the trajectory Isaiah 56 widens).

  • to join oneself
  • to be added to

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Leviticus 18:26 (you shall keep My laws and My orders, and shall not do any of these abominations — the native inhabitant and the convert uniting himself among you); Numbers 15:14 (if a convert should unite with you in your land, to make a yield offering, an aroma of pleasant smell to the LORD — as you do, so he shall do, as the congregation does).

G4325.6

προσδεκτός (prosdektos)

(pros-thek-TOS)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Adjective — acceptable, welcome (from προσδέχομαι — the acceptability-family of Isaiah 61:2's "acceptable year" and 1 Peter 2:5's "acceptable sacrifices"). Proverbs' double doctrine of what heaven and thrones welcome: abominable to the LORD are crooked ways, "but acceptable to Him are all the blameless in their ways" — and in the light of the king's face is life, his acceptable ones as a cloud of late rain.

  • acceptable
  • welcome

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Proverbs 11:20 (abominable to the LORD are crooked ways — but acceptable to Him are all the unblemished in their ways); Proverbs 16:15 (the son of a king is in the light of life — and the ones acceptable to him are as a cloud of the late rain).

προσδίδωμι (prosdidōmi)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to give in addition, give besides (πρός, in addition + δίδωμι, to give). Leah's word at Simeon's birth — and Ezekiel's inversion of all harlotry: Jerusalem the harlot who pays her lovers in addition, hired by none.

  • to give in addition
  • to give besides

Septuagint usage

3 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Genesis 29:33 (Leah conceived again and bore a son — "because the LORD heard that I am hated, He has given me this one in addition also" — and she called his name Simeon); Ezekiel 16:33 (to all harlots gifts are given — but you gave your gifts in addition to all your lovers, hiring them to come to you from every side); Ezekiel 16:34 (in you it was the reverse of the women — in your giving hire in addition, while no hire was given to you).

G4332.1

προσοράω (prosoraō)

(pross-o-RAH-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to look upon, regard (πρός, toward, + ὁράω, to see; the ABP interlinear prints the negated aorist οὐ προσεῖδον as a single fused row at this slot). Job on his comforters: 'my brothers looked not at me; like a failing brook, or as a wave, they passed me by' (Job 6:15). Friendship as a wadi — torrential in winter, dry in drought, gone precisely when needed (Job 6:17-21: 'you saw my wound and were afraid'). The complaint carves the negative space the gospel fills: a brother born for adversity (Proverbs 17:17), a God who does regard the afflicted (Psalm 25:16), a Friend who is not ashamed to call them brothers (Hebrews 2:11).

  • to look upon
  • to regard

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Job 6:15 (my brothers looked not at me; as a failing brook, or as a wave, they passed me by).

G4332.2

προσεῖπον (proseipon)

(pross-EE-pon)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to address, speak to (the defective aorist that serves προσαγορεύω, to designate — the verb of Hebrews 5:10). The adulteress's approach completed: 'then, taking hold, she kissed him, and with impudent face she said to him...' — and the speech that follows is a masterclass in ambush: peace-offerings, a spread couch, a spice-list, an absent husband (Proverbs 7:13-20). The kiss and the address are weapons; 'with much converse she caused him to go astray, and with the snares of her lips she ran him aground' (Proverbs 7:21). Scripture knows another weaponized kiss and greeting (Luke 22:47-48) — and prices both.

  • to address
  • to speak to

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Proverbs 7:13 (then, taking hold, she fondles him, and with impudent face she says to him).

G4332.3

προσεκκαίω (prosekkaiō)

(pross-ek-KEH-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to kindle further, burn in addition (πρός, besides, + ἐκκαίω, to kindle up). From the taunt-ballad of Heshbon — the song Numbers attributes to 'those who speak in riddles' out of the book of the LORD's wars: 'their seed shall perish, Heshbon unto Dibon; and their women still kindled fire over Moab' (Numbers 21:27-30). The Amorites' own victory-poetry over Moab is inherited by Israel when Sihon falls: the conqueror's song becomes the conquered's epitaph. The chapter files it as title-evidence — the land taken from Sihon, not Moab (Deuteronomy 2:9, 24) — poetry entered into the covenant record.

  • to kindle further
  • to burn besides

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Numbers 21:30 (and their seed shall perish — Heshbon unto Dibon; and their women still burn a fire over Moab).

G4332.4

προσεμπίπρημι (prosempiprēmi)

(pross-em-PEE-pree-mee)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to set on fire besides, spread fire onto (πρός, onto, + ἐμπίπρημι, to burn). The spreading-fire statute: 'if fire going forth should find thorn-bushes and set on fire a threshing-floor, or standing grain, or a field, the one who kindled the fire shall pay' (Exodus 22:6). The law's premise is quietly searching: your fire remains yours after it leaves your property — consequences are owned by their kindler. James takes the figure to its interior: the tongue is a fire, and a small flame sets a whole forest ablaze (James 3:5-6); the statute's restitution logic is the ethics of every spark we start.

  • to set on fire besides
  • to spread fire to

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 22:6 (and if a fire going forth should find thorn-bushes, and should set on fire a threshing-floor, or corn, or a field, the one having burning with the fire shall pay).

προσέτι (proseti)

(pross-EH-tee)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Adverb — moreover, still further (πρός, in addition, + ἔτι, yet; the slot sits beside προσέρχομαι by numbering only). David under Shimei's stones and curses, restraining Abishai's sword: 'behold, my son, who came forth from my belly, seeks my life — and moreover now the Benjamite. Leave him to curse, for the LORD has told him' (2 Samuel 16:10-11). The a-fortiori of a broken king: if Absalom, then surely Shimei; the cursing is received as possibly from God's own hand, with hope that 'the LORD will see my humiliation and return good to me for his cursing this day' (16:12). The greater Son of David went further still — reviled, He did not revile in return (1 Peter 2:23).

  • moreover
  • still further

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: 2 Samuel 16:11 (behold, my son, the one coming forth from out of my belly, seeks my life; and moreover now the son of the Benjamite — leave him to curse, for the LORD told him).

προσηλυτεύω (prosēlyteuō)

(pross-ee-lee-TEV-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to sojourn as a proselyte, live as a resident convert (from προσήλυτος, proselyte; the slot sits beside προσηλόω by numbering). In the idolatry-inquiry oracle the covenant net is cast wide: 'any man of the house of Israel, or of the strangers sojourning in Israel, who separates from me and sets up his idols in his heart... I the LORD will answer him myself' (Ezekiel 14:7). The sojourner is under the same holiness and before the same God as the native — one law for both is Torah's refrain (Leviticus 24:22; Numbers 15:15-16), Isaiah's welcome widens it to the joined foreigner (Isaiah 56:3-7), and the gospel finishes the arc: no longer strangers and sojourners, but fellow citizens (Ephesians 2:19).

  • to sojourn as proselyte
  • to live as a convert

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Ezekiel 14:7 (for a man, a man from the house of Israel, and from the foreigners of the ones converting in Israel, who ever should separate from me, and set his thoughts upon his heart... and should come to the prophet to ask him concerning me — I the LORD will answer to him).

G4339

προσήλυτος (prosḗlytos)

(pros-ay'-loo-tos | prose-A-loo-tose | prose-A-lyoo-tose)

Definition

from the alternate of G4334; an arriver from a foreign region, i.e., (specially), an acceder (convert) to Judaism ("proselyte"); proselyte.

  • a newcomer
    • a stranger, alien
  • a proselyte
    • one who has come over from a Gentile religion to Judaism

Note

The Rabbis distinguished two classes of proselytes: proselytes of righteousness, who received circumcision and bound themselves to keep the whole of the Mosaic law and to comply with all the requirements of Judaism and proselytes of the gate, who dwelt among the Jews, and although uncircumcised observed certain specific laws, especially the seven precepts of Noah (i.e., against the seven chief sins: idolatry, blasphemy against God, homicide, unchastity, theft or plundering, rebellion against rulers, and the use of flesh with blood).

προσηνής (prosēnēs)

(pross-ee-NEES)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Adjective — kind, agreeable, welcome (the slot sits beside προσήλυτος by numbering only). The far-country proverb: 'as cold water is welcome to a thirsting soul, so is good news from a land far off' (Proverbs 25:25). The comparison presumes a body that knows thirst and a heart that knows waiting — relief measured by the want it answers. The canon builds its gospel-vocabulary on exactly this frame: feet beautiful on the mountains because the news they carry is good (Isaiah 52:7; Romans 10:15), and the far country is where the news comes from — and where the prodigal is seen by the father while still a long way off (Luke 15:13, 20).

  • kind
  • welcome, agreeable

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Proverbs 25:25 (as cold water is kind to a thirsting soul, so is a good message from a land far off).

G4339.2

πρόσθεμα (prosthema)

(PROS-theh-mah)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — an addition, added yield; an appendage (from προστίθημι, to add). The orchard-law's promised increase — the fifth-year fruit eaten as "an addition to you of its produce," holiness rewarded with yield — and the widening appendage of the side-chambers winding upward around Ezekiel's visionary temple.

  • addition
  • appendage

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Leviticus 19:25 (in the fifth year you shall eat the fruit — its produce is an addition to you; I am the LORD your God); Ezekiel 41:7 (the breadth of the upper side-chamber — an appendage out of the wall, up to the uppermost round about the house, that it should be widened above).

G4339.3

πρόσθεσις (prosthesis)

(PROSS-theh-sis)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — an addition, an added portion (from προστίθημι, to add). From the vision-land's title deed: 'these are the borders by which you shall inherit the land for the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel — an addition of a measured portion' (Ezekiel 47:13; the Hebrew reads 'Joseph two portions' — the LXX names the double share simply 'the addition'). The restored allotment is more than restoration: Joseph's extra cord of land, equal shares for all the tribes (47:14), and then the astonishing clause — the sojourners who dwell among you 'shall be to you as native-born; with you they shall be allotted an inheritance' (Ezekiel 47:22-23). The new land is measured with addition built in (Romans 11:17).

  • addition
  • added portion

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Ezekiel 47:13 (thus says the Lord GOD: these are the borders you shall inherit of the land for the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel — an addition of a piece of measured land).

G4339.4

προσθλίβω (prosthlibō)

(pross-THLEE-vo)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to press against, squeeze toward (πρός, against, + θλίβω, to press). The second of the donkey's three refusals: 'seeing the angel of God, she pressed herself against the wall, and squeezed Balaam's foot to the wall — and he added again to whip her' (Numbers 22:25). The beast sees what the seer cannot; the crushed foot is the mercy, for the drawn sword waits ahead (22:33 — 'unless she had turned aside, I would have slain you'). Obstruction as rescue: the prophet for hire is saved by his own donkey, and Peter files the scene as the madness of the way of Balaam rebuked (2 Peter 2:15-16).

  • to press against
  • to squeeze toward

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Numbers 22:25 (and the donkey, seeing the angel of God, pressed herself against the wall, and squeezed the foot of Balaam to the wall; and he added again to crack the whip on her).

G4339.5

προσκαθίστημι (proskathistēmi)

(pross-kah-THIS-tee-mee)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to appoint in addition, station alongside (πρός, besides, + καθίστημι, to appoint). At the Timnah wedding: 'it came to pass, in their fearing him, that they posted to him thirty companions, and they were with him' (Judges 14:11). The groomsmen are security detail — companions assigned out of fear, not friendship — and the seven-day feast proves it: they extort the riddle's answer by threatening the bride with fire (Judges 14:15), and the 'companion' ends up with Samson's wife (14:20). The false friends of the strong man stand in photographic negative to the friend of the Bridegroom who rejoices at his voice (John 3:29).

  • to station alongside
  • to appoint besides

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Judges 14:11 (and it came to pass in their fearing him, that they posted in front to him thirty companions, and they were with him).

  • temporary

προσκαίω (proskaiō)

(pross-KEH-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to burn upon, scorch through (πρός, upon, + καίω, to burn). From the rusted-cauldron parable's last resort: the emptied pot is set back on its own coals 'so that it should be burnt through, and its bronze heated, and its uncleanness melt away in the midst of it, and its rust fail' (Ezekiel 24:11) — and then the bitter verdict: 'its great rust did not come out of it' (24:12). Jerusalem as cookware whose corrosion survives the scouring: judgment itself as smelting, the fire doing what soap cannot (Isaiah 1:25). The hope beyond the parable is a refiner who sits down to the work and finishes it (Malachi 3:2-3).

  • to scorch through
  • to burn upon

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Ezekiel 24:11 (and it should stand upon her coals, so that it should be burnt through, and her brass utensils should be heated, and her uncleanness should melt away in the midst of her, and her poison should fail).

προσκαταλείπω (proskataleipō)

(pross-kah-tah-LEE-po)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to leave over besides, leave a surplus (πρός, in addition, + καταλείπω, to leave). The tabernacle building fund's unique closing entry: 'the supply of works was enough for them to make the furnishing — and they left a surplus' (Exodus 36:7). One verse earlier Moses had to broadcast a restraining order: the people were 'much more than enough' and had to be stopped from bringing (36:5-6) — Scripture's only halted stewardship campaign. Willing hearts out-gave the blueprint; the same grace Paul certifies in Macedonia, overflowing beyond ability (2 Corinthians 8:2-3), from givers God loves cheerful (9:7).

  • to leave a surplus
  • to leave over besides

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Exodus 36:7 (and the supply of works was to them enough for the making of the furniture; and they left surplus).

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — a burnt deposit, the blackening scorched onto a pot (πρός + καίω, to burn). Both occurrences are the same terrible simile in the prophets' day-of-the-LORD scenes: every face gathered like the burnt-black of a kettle — dread written on the skin.

  • a burnt blackening
  • scorching of a pot

Septuagint usage

2 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Joel 2:6 (before the locust-army's face peoples shall be crushed — every face as the burnt of a pot); Nahum 2:10 (Nineveh's emptying — heart-break, loosening of knees, pangs upon every loin; and the faces of all as the burnt of a pot).

προσκρούω (proskrouō)

(pross-KROO-o)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to dash against, rush upon (πρός, against, + κρούω, to knock; the slot sits beside προσκόπτω by numbering only). From the Behemoth speech: 'if there comes an inundation, he shall not notice; he is confident though the Jordan rushes up into his mouth' (Job 40:23). A creature so founded that a river in flood is a drink — untroubled not by ignorance but by build. The LORD's argument is by exhibit: I made this calm (Job 40:15, 19); can you? The creature's unshakeableness preaches its Maker's — the God who neither faints nor is weary (Isaiah 40:28), under whom the redeemed do not fear though the waters roar (Psalm 46:2-3).

  • to rush upon
  • to dash against

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Job 40:23 (if there becomes an inundation, in no way shall it be perceived; he relies that the Jordan will rush up into his mouth).

προσλογίζομαι (proslogizomai)

(pros-lo-YEE-zo-meh)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to count in addition, reckon among (πρός, to + λογίζομαι, to reckon). The priest's added valuation of the consecrated field, the border-lands reckoned to the Canaanites — and the psalmist's darkest self-reckoning: counted among those going down to the pit.

  • to count in addition
  • to be reckoned among

Septuagint usage

3 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Leviticus 27:18 (if he consecrates his field after the jubilee, the priest shall count the money in addition according to the years remaining — and it shall be deducted from the valuation); Joshua 13:3 (from the Shihor east of Egypt to the border of Ekron northward — reckoned in addition to the Canaanites: the five lords of the Philistines); Psalms 88:4 ("I was counted among those who go down to the pit — I have become as a man without help, free among the dead").

προσμίγνυμι (prosmignymi)

(pross-MIG-nee-mee)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to mingle with, mix into (πρός, with, + μίγνυμι, to mix). The LXX's blunt reading of the laughter-proverb: 'grief does not mingle with gladness; and the end of joy comes into mourning' (Proverbs 14:13 — the Hebrew: even in laughter the heart may ache). Under the sun, joys are unmixed only briefly and end badly; the proverb is honest about every feast this side of the curse. The gospel's answer is not a better mixture but a conversion: 'your sorrow shall be turned into joy... and your joy no one takes from you' (John 16:20-22), until mourning itself is retired (Revelation 21:4).

  • to mingle with
  • to mix into

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Proverbs 14:13 (distress does not mingle with gladness; and the finality of joy comes into mourning).

G4357.2

προσνοέω (prosnoeō)

(pros-no-EH-oh)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to fix the mind on: attend, consider (νοέω with πρός). Balaam's hilltop sight of the people dwelling alone; Daniel's scrutiny of the horns; and the Redeemer's solitary survey: "I paid attention, and there was none upholding — so My own arm worked salvation."

  • to attend to, consider closely

Septuagint usage

5 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Numbers 23:9 ("from the top of the rocks I regard him — a people dwelling alone"); Judges 3:26 (Ehud slips away while the servants attend the locked doors); Isaiah 63:5 ("I paid attention, and there was no one helping — and My own arm delivered"); Daniel 7:8 ("I considered the horns — and behold, another little horn").

G4357.3

πρόσοδος (prosodos)

(PROSS-o-doss)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — revenue, income (πρός, toward, + ὁδός, way — what comes in; the slot sits beside προσμένω by numbering only). The LXX's economics of tyranny: 'a king lacking revenue is a great extortioner; but the one detesting injustice shall live a long time' (Proverbs 28:16 — the Hebrew reads 'a prince lacking understanding'; the Greek names the fiscal engine of oppression). Underfunded power squeezes its people; the proverb's counterweight is the ruler whose hatred of injustice outlasts his appetite. Samuel's exit-audit is the portrait in office — 'whose ox have I taken? whom have I extorted?' (1 Samuel 12:3-4) — and the King of Psalm 72 delivers the needy rather than billing them (Psalm 72:12-14).

  • revenue
  • income

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Proverbs 28:16 (a king lacking revenue is a great extortioner; but the one detesting injustice shall live a long time).

G4357.4

προσόζω (prosozō)

(pross-O-zo)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to give off a stench (πρός, besides, + ὄζω, to smell — the blunt verb of John 11:39, 'by now he stinks'). From the great penitential psalm: 'my stripes stank and festered from the face of my folly' (Psalm 38:5). Sin somatized — David describes guilt as an untreated wound, and refuses perfume: the smell is in the confession. The psalm's honesty is its hope, for it ends at the door of the only physician — 'make haste to help me, O Lord of my salvation' (Psalm 38:22); the LORD heals the broken-hearted and binds their wounds (Psalm 147:3), and the stone rolled from Lazarus's stench (John 11:39-44) shows how far His remedy reaches.

  • to stink
  • to give off odor

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Psalms 38:5 (my stripes give out an odor and fester from the face of my folly).

G4357.5

προσοίγω (prosoigō)

(pross-EE-go)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to shut to, close (πρός, to, + οἴγω, to open — here its compound of closing; aorist προσέωξεν). Lot at the threshold of Sodom's mob: 'Lot came forth to them to the threshold, and the door he shut behind him' (Genesis 19:6). One frail door between his guests and the city — and when his pleading fails, the guests prove to be the guard: the angels pull him in, shut the door themselves, and strike the crowd blind (Genesis 19:10-11). The shut door is Genesis's recurring mercy-line: the LORD shut Noah in (Genesis 7:16); and it is the parable's warning-line too — 'and the door was shut' (Matthew 25:10).

  • to shut
  • to close to

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Genesis 19:6 (and Lot came forth to them, to the threshold, and the door he shut behind him).

προσόχθισμα (prosochthisma)

(pros-OKH-thees-mah)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun from προσοχθίζω (G4360, to be disgusted, provoked — the verb of Psalm 95 quoted in Hebrews 3:10, "I was provoked with that generation"); a loathsome thing — an idol as the object of God's disgust. The histories' brand on Chemosh, Ashtoreth, and Milcom, and on everything Josiah's reform swept out.

  • loathsome thing, abomination
  • idol (as object of divine disgust)

Septuagint usage

8 occurrences in the LXX Reference interlinear: Deuteronomy 7:26 (you shall not bring the loathsome thing into your house, lest you become devoted to destruction like it); 1 Kings 11:33 (Chemosh the loathsome thing of Moab, Milcom the loathsome thing of the sons of Ammon — Solomon's fall); 2 Kings 23:13 (the high places Solomon built for the loathsome things — Josiah defiled them); Ezekiel 5:11 (because you defiled My sanctuary with your loathsome things, I also will thrust you away).

πρόσοψις (prosopsis)

(PROSS-op-sis)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — appearance, aspect (πρός, toward, + ὄψις, sight; the slot sits beside προσοχθίζω by numbering only). Nebuchadnezzar's dream reported: 'behold, one great image — and its aspect was overwhelming, standing before your face, and its vision fearful' (Daniel 2:31). Empire leads with appearance: gold head, dazzling front, terror as design language. The dream's verdict is aimed exactly there — a stone 'cut without hands' strikes the spectacular thing and it becomes chaff from a summer threshing-floor, while the unspectacular stone grows into a mountain filling the earth (Daniel 2:34-35, 44-45): the kingdom that cannot be shaken arrives without an aspect to fear (Luke 17:20-21; Hebrews 12:28).

  • aspect
  • appearance

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Daniel 2:31 (you, O king, viewed, and behold, one great image; that great image, and the aspect of it was overwhelming, standing before your face, and the vision of it was fearful).

G4360.3

προσπαίζω (prospaizō)

(pross-PEH-zo)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to play before, sport in front of (πρός, before, + παίζω, to play). From Job's counter-case against tidy retribution: the wicked prosper, grow old in power, 'they remain like everlasting sheep, and their children play before them' (Job 21:7-11). The canon keeps this data honest — Asaph nearly lost his footing over the same lawn games (Psalm 73:3-5) — and resolves it only from the sanctuary end: their place is slippery ground (Psalm 73:17-18; Job 21:30). The playing children themselves are not the indictment; Zechariah promises exactly that scene as restoration — streets full of boys and girls playing (Zechariah 8:5). The riddle is timing, and God holds the calendar.

  • to play before
  • to sport in front of

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Job 21:11 (and they remain as everlasting sheep, and their children play before them).

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Wisdom's autobiography at creation: 'I was beside him, fitting all together; I was the one in whom he rejoiced daily, and I was glad before him at every time' (Proverbs 8:30). Before any world there was mutual delight — a rejoicing-in and a gladness-before, older than light. The New Testament gives the portrait its name: the Word who was with God in the beginning, through whom all things were fitted (John 1:1-3; Colossians 1:16-17), the beloved Son in whom the Father is well pleased (Matthew 3:17), Christ the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24) — and the astonishing sequel: 'my delights were with the sons of men' (Proverbs 8:31).

προτέρημα (proterēma)

(pro-TEH-ree-mah)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Noun — precedence, the advantage or honor of the field (from πρότερος, former, first; the slot sits beside προτείνω by numbering). Deborah's terms to Barak: 'going I will go with you — but know that the honor shall not be yours on the way you take, for by the hand of a woman the LORD will deliver up Sisera' (Judges 4:9). Conditional obedience forfeits the laurels; the general gets his victory and Jael's tent-peg gets the song (Judges 5:24-27). God's habit of routing glory through the unexpected hand guards the glory itself (1 Corinthians 1:27-29) — and yet grace keeps Barak on faith's honor roll anyway (Hebrews 11:32): the LORD remembers the going, not only the hedging.

  • precedence
  • honor of the field

Ivory overlaid with gold, lions on six steps — 'nothing like it in any kingdom' (10:20). The canon lets the splendor stand and then outbids it: a greater than Solomon is here (Matthew 12:42), and His throne is approached not by guarded steps but with boldness (Hebrews 4:16).

  • forepart
  • carved bust

Septuagint usage

προφυλάσσω (prophylassō)

(pro-fee-LAHS-so)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Verb — to guard beforehand, keep oneself from (πρό, before, + φυλάσσω, to guard; future middle here; the slot sits beside προφθάνω by numbering only). From David's deliverance-song: 'I will be unblemished to him, and I shall keep guard from my lawlessness' (2 Samuel 22:24; the twin of Psalm 18:23). The integrity stanza is preventive, not merely penitent — sin watched at the approaches, guarded against before it arrives (Psalm 19:13 'keep your servant back from presumptuous sins'). The keeping ultimately runs the other direction: the covenant king's blamelessness is perfected only in David's greater Son, and the guard over the saints is God's own — able to keep you from stumbling (Jude 24; 1 Peter 1:5).

  • to guard beforehand
  • to keep oneself from

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: 2 Samuel 22:24 (and I will be unblemished to him, and I shall keep guard from my lawlessness).

G4400.1

πρόχειρος (procheiros)

(PRO-khee-ross)

Definition

Septuagint (Apostolic Bible Polyglot) extension number — a Greek OT word absent from the NT Strong's list. Adjective — at hand, ready, imminent (πρό, before, + χείρ, hand — what lies ready to hand; the slot sits beside προχειρίζομαι by numbering). The LXX's two-deaths proverb: 'the just man, dying, leaves regret behind; but ready-at-hand and gloated-over becomes the destruction of the impious' (Proverbs 11:3 — the Hebrew speaks of integrity guiding the upright and crookedness destroying the treacherous; the Greek recasts it as the two endings). The righteous man's death is mourned — precious in the sight of the LORD (Psalm 116:15); the wicked's ruin arrives close at hand and unlamented (Proverbs 11:7, 10). Every obituary preaches; the proverb asks which one is being written.

  • ready at hand
  • imminent

Septuagint usage

1 occurrence in the LXX Reference interlinear: Proverbs 11:3 (the just man in dying forsakes regret; but beforehand takes place, and incurs ridicule, the destruction of the impious).
